  1. I have a few guitars , and they are all so much fun and different in their own ways... But my very favorite is Curley... my 1933 Gibson L-OO... Restored by the best and most talented luthier!

  2. My favorite guitar is usually the one I am holding - but I will go with this one (Collings SoCo Deluxe):

  3. You heard me! I'll go first I'm pretty enamored with this one - I don't deserve something this nice, but maybe I will one day

  4. I definitely agree with Dave's assessment of the "favorite" guitar is the one I'm currently playing. My "sentimental" favorite is a nod to my father's memory. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby, and his recent passing at the end of 2016 led me to a prototype Bourgeois OM - Soloist Limited Edition, heavily bear-clawed European spruce top with a gorgeous cocobolo back and sides. It sounds as good or better than it looks. Courtney Hartman of Della Mae promoted this guitar on a video to promote the official release of the 30th Anniversary LE (or at least to my spotting telltale marks on the top indicates). I can't help but think of him every time I pick it up to play.

  5. This is my prettiest. It was my 50th birthday present from my wife (though she had little to do with choosing it ). My favourite, though, is the acoustic in my profile pic, it was my first 'proper' acoustic. It's a Martin DX1R. It's the cheapest dreadnought that Martin does I think and it doesn't even have real wood back and sides, but it sounds great and I play it almost every day.

  6. My favourite electric guitar is in my profile photo, so for this I’ll use my favourite acoustic one: a replica of Paul McCartney 1964 Texan.

  7. This is my modified Traveler Guitar. I am travelling weekly for work and I was looking for a guitar that fits in a suitcase or an airline overhead compartment. So this is the solution I found. The center part is the original Traveler Guitar Ultra Light. It is full scale, but has no headstock as the tuning machines are relocated into the body. To make it more confortable to play, I made a detachable upper-arm support and a lap rest, that I take off for travelling. This Frankenstein is not my best guitar (that would be my PRS), but without it, all those nights in business hotels would be very boring. That's why it is my favorite anyhow.

  8. Here's my old timer. I've had it since summer of 1984 but I'm its third owner.

  9. Well, I don't like to say favorite! But this is the guitar that still stuns me whenever I get it out. A PRS Hollowbody II.

  10. Just one?!?! It's hard to pick one and it also depends on what week, how the stars are aligned and who knows what else? But ok. I'll play. Since it's this forum and I saw Steve playing it on a Live Lesson, so he is somewhat responsible, I'll post this one. My 1972 Gibson 325:

  12. I play this guitar more than any other guitar I have. Plays well and sounds great. But I rarely plug it in to my amp.

  13. This is my all-time favorite. Breedlove Oregon Concert, all Myrtlewood. I've been lucky enough to own a Goodall Koa concert jumbo with cedar top, which was an incredible guitar. This one isn't as loud as the Goodall, but the tone blows me away every time I play it, which is pretty much every day. It's so rich and resonant, and balanced as well. I almost passed it by when I was shopping, assuming the light wood would produce a somewhat brittle tone focused on the highs, similar to maple. I was dead wrong and count my blessings that I tried it out on a whim.

  14. My favourite is a 1989 Korean Squier strat. Sometimes you're lucky enough to find a guitar that feels and plays just right for you. This is the one guitar that I'd never part with. These "S" serial Squiers are becoming quite sought after these days.

  15. Here is a piece to get the ball rolling. It’s by Tarrega and it is called Adalita. It is a constant work in progress for me, and a fall back piece if I’m running out of ideas at a wedding. I hope you enjoy it.

  17. Eric Daw and his wife Melissa host a very entertaining and informative guitar repair podcast each week called 'The Fret Files'. They cover just about any topic you can imagine and take listener questions via phone and email. If you are interested you can check it out at http://www.fretfiles.com/. In addition to his repair work, Eric builds custom electric guitars and Melissa creates wonder leather guitar straps. You can check both out at https://www.ericdaw.com/.

  18. Yes, Greg, I believe you are correct. G(major)6 uses the same notes (pitches, for the purists; pitch classes for the ultra purists) as an Em7 in first inversion. The name will depend on the context.

  19. As an aside, am I correct in thinking E G B D are the notes also associated with G6 ? I need to review my theory also. Greg

  20. Beautiful guitar! I would imagine that luthier sports a large beard at times? I go back and forth between a quality 00-14 fret and the L-00 for a "couch potato" acoustic. Used Collings C10 Deluxe w/cutaway is a rare bird.

  21. Steve confirmed the Trevecca rooms - the cost will be $60 per person a night. The only real downside is that everyone has to be checked out of the rooms by noon on Friday. Apparently, Trevecca is hosting a big summer camp that weekend.

  23. Nicely done Mark... Really like the slide followed by the hammer on / offs starting at about 27 seconds. Now off to try to duplicate that sound. Great Job!!

  24. I have found those Fundamental Changes books to be good too. I have The Complete Guide to Blues Guitar and a couple of others. You have to go download the tracks, but after that they are really nice books. I also like the "100 Rock Lessons", "100 Blues Lessons", "100 Country Lessons" series. There are DVDs that you can buy as well for additional licks ("100 Blues Licks", etc.)

  29. Here's my favourite, a 2016 Taylor Big Baby (BBT). Nothing fancy ... but it is mine. Why do I love it so much? Well, it's the first guitar I ever went and played and bought based on sound and feel. Almost everything that I know musically, I learned on this guitar. Oh, and I'll never forget how my wife and son had the whole music store laughing with multiple variations on the line "Look, our big baby wants his own Big Baby!". I recently bought a Strat to move into the world of electric guitar but I've mostly found that it has inspired me to play my Taylor even more... go figure.

  30. I agree Steve, I hope that this remains a civil and friendly and helpful place. Some forums on the internet are so unpleasant, it's nice to be able to kick back with this community and feel at home and welcome.

  32. as the Live Lessons moderator (or at least one of them) I hope I haven't missed any 'bad words' in the live chat. I'm typically flipping screens from Gruhn's inventory to Googling answers to questions.. so sometimes the chat fly's by on me.

  34. Guys, I think I know what the problem is. I had several bits of media on the guitargathering.com site including both of those pdfs. The guitargathering.com site is currently offline while we are troubleshooting a problem. I didn't realize that it would make those links not work. I'll upload the PDFs to this site. Sorry about the hassle. They should be up by tomorrow. - Steve

  38. As a Canadian that moved to Texas, I learned that Americans are much more affected and repulsed by swearing than Canadians or Brits that I knew at home. You just learn to adapt. I am just thankful for the refuge from Fake news and politics!!!

  39. Thank you for this approach, Steve. We all need a safe learning environment to share our thoughts and doubts and obstacles but most of all the joy that we have in the learning.

  43. Thank you for your thoughts, Steve. It's rare to find encouraging places to learn...places where people are there to help when you struggle. That's one of the things that has always set this forum apart from so many others.
