New guitar weekend (x2).

I went to look at some guitars last weekend. I have been interested in picking up an older guitar and was also looking for a dobro for my son (who has been living in China for the past year). I attended a local guitar show in February and long story short, last weekend, I visited with one of the dealers from the show (who in addition to having an awesome Martin collection, had some nice older guitars and a Dobro for sale).  I ended up coming home with a 1933 Gibson L-OO and a mid-1970s Dobro.

The L-OO has had some work done to it (neck reset, bridge and pick guard replaced). It is the lightest guitar I have ever played and it is pretty loud for its size. I don't know if you can see it (second photo) -  it has a cantilevered fretboard. I thought McPherson invented that concept - but apparently, Gibson was making cantilevered fretboards in the 1930s. Greg Voros told me that L-OOs with elevated fretboards are pretty rare.

The Dobro will be a nice surprise for my son when he comes home this summer (I am counting on the fact that he doesn't read this forum). :)

By the way, the Dobro is about 10 times heavier than the Gibson.

Wow, what a fun shopping trip!

The Gibson is absolutely gorgeous and in really good condition. You have a superb bit of history there, I bet she sounds lovely. Wow, what a great find!!

I like the look of the Dobro too, I bet your son will be really pleased with it!

Enjoy!???

Well done, Dave. A friend of mine has a 1928 Gibson L-00 and whenever I get to play it I am reminded of how Gibson got its great reputation.

Dave,

Really sweet looking instruments.  L-00's have always intrigued me, so congratulations on your find (I too believed McP's claim to originality on cantilevered fretboards).  Perhaps your and Barbera should work on a duet routine with vintage Gibby L-00s.  :D

What a nice find, Dave, and what a nice surprise this will be for your son. You two will enjoy the time with the guitars together.

He was lucky to inherit musical talent from somewhere (he certainly didn't get it from me). :)

A quick update: My son and his wife (who have lived in China for the past year) made an all too brief visit to the U.S. last month. I surprised him with his new (used) Dobro - which he played a lot while he was home. My daughter in-law had expressed an interest in learning how to play the guitar and I surprised her with a nylon string Taylor. She was so excited that she immediately decided to take the guitar back to China with her (which was no small undertaking - they had a lot of luggage).

So the Taylor is now in Shanghai and the Dobro (which was too large and heavy to make the trip) awaits my son's next visit - which won't be until next summer. By the way, my daughter in-law had already learned to play Folsom Prison Blues before they left for China. ?
