  1. Similar story, early put downs and now love learning about the guitar and so forth. Very insightful speech, love TED talks....

  2. I purchased 3 pedals in the last year. I have a Flashback Delay, Boss CE-5 Chorus, and East River Drive overdrive. I have enjoyed playing with them, but I wanted more. I was looking at pedal boards. Even with these few items the cost keeps building. The few pedals I have also created a cable nightmare. I started thinking about multi-effects pedals again. I can't afford the Helix, or Headrush, or high end Boss pedals. I read reviews about the Boss GT-1 which were pretty positive. It isn't fancy like the more expensive models, but it packs massive power in a small case. The little guy is pretty heavy, and the design feels solid. It has a small screen which allows you to setup amp and effect combos like a virtual pedal board. Operation is pretty simple. There are 3 large easy to use buttons to control moving through different setups, tuner, looper, etc. There are 99 presets, and 99 which I can edit the way I want. There is also a huge online library of patches (presets) to download so support is strong. If you don't have just the right sound then you may be able to download it. I spent the first night going through all 99 presets. Whew! I really was a little disappointed, and I even thought maybe I would return it. The second night I played only about 35 presets. I had a blast! I spent more time trying to ring some sound out of it. I mostly play clean, but I am a delay fan so all these choices are a little overwhelming. There really is a huge sound pallet in this little pedal. I haven't found a really good sound setup for a nice warm acoustic, but I read it is in there maybe with some adjustment. There is a some fine hippy-dippy effects in here, and I had some of the most fun with them. I also played what I believe is a Van Halen tribute which actually sounded better when I wasn't playing because the wonderful distorted swirling sounds as the note faded away. It also has a volume/expression pedal which I really wanted. I think it's a keeper! Boss GT-1

  3. Me too Dave, when I was 7 or 8 my piano teacher asked me to leave and not come back because I was scaring away his customers. LOL I ended up learning from my mom instead and still love the classical music she taught me.

  4. "Dark Side" indeed. I have invested much ( money and time in tweaking) into like-devices and there are rewards down the line in the effort. I don't know anything about the Boss unit, but it is all about finding something that inspires and promotes m=one's musical enthusiasm. I have my tube amps as well but the modelers can be very fun. Congrats and have some. Greg

  7. My first 3: Flashback Delay Boss CE-5 Chorus East River Drive Overdrive The chorus and delay are great for a lot of different styles. The overdrive is great when you are playing riffs or power chords. You can use pedals with almost any amp including the Katana. Any amp with effects built in can be used also, but you have to be careful because not all effects will play together nicely. I just added the Boss GT-1 which has 108 effects in a small space. The Boss GT-1 cost less than the first 3 pedals. I posted about it yesterday in the forum. My original pedals play nicely with the GT-1 too. Have fun exploring the new soundscape.

  8. Diane, I expected more of a spirited response, certainly more than 7 responses. I'm surprised, almost disappointed.😉 @ChrisJ032, this is a video you may find helpful. It is titled "TOP 4 pedals for starters". I don't fully agree; he has two overdrives in four pedals for beginners. This is a concept called, I think it's called, overdrive stacking. Hardly for beginners, especially for the first four pedals. But consider the source (I mean me). These guys know far more than I do. But hopefully you will find it helpful.

  10. @matonanjin Every Martin Clapton model that I have played has sounded great. Also - I don't know much about Martins - are their signature models made in their custom shop? I do believe that they use better wood on all their signature models. Good luck with these guitars Ron. Let us know what you decide to do!

  11. What an inspirational speech. I constantly try to encourage my guitar playing friends to give singing a try, regardless of their perceived talent. Sadly most persist on shying away from it. But on occasion, one might give it a go and I can see the shell slightly crack open. The word I capture in my life anymore is "joyful". It might be redundant in my remarks here on the forum but for me, music is just that, whether playing or singing. Further, if you can share your musical pursuits with others, that joy is only amplified. Thanks for sharing this. Greg

  12. That's as beautiful as ever @mark_h. I can imagine it working perfectly (if you'll forgive the pun) at a wedding. Ian

  13. Thanks Ian - Great message. I was 'asked' to leave my 5th grade band and for years after, felt that I was a musical failure. That feeling persisted until found Steve's course and met Steve. You and your teacher are so right - if it gives you joy, just do it!
