From the Guardian:

... Popular music’s centre of gravity has undeniably moved towards solo artists, at least when it comes to serious commercial success. This paradigm shift has been obvious for a while now (“What happened to all the bands?” asked Rostam Batmanglij after leaving Vampire Weekend in 2016. “Is it just that bands are corny now?”) and has accelerated across genres. ...

Good article, thanks Diane. Personally, I really don’t like most of the modern music scene and the songs produced. Nothing memorable. Perhaps I am a creature of the sixties and seventies when music was fantastic and the bands were better, IMHO.

Yes, who needs a band once you figure out the corporate chord progression and learn how to code it into the software.

With the likes of Justin bieber,  Taylor Swift,  Drake, etc

People go see them, not the " hired gun", guitarist or drummer hired to back them.

I miss full bands like Chicago, so good and you knew THEY were playing the music.

I think it's from YouTube and TicToc..

anyone can be a content creator anywhere they are..

as I scroll down my YT feed.. of course AI suggests things to me from all over YT.. many odd subjects

you can put on any backing track or even edit it in later.. now you're a rap artist singing in various locations

That's the big problem, I think, that ANYONE can be a "rap artist" 😂, and so many people are getting into creating content for attention rather than love of music. Not everyone, but quite a few.  I'm a big believer in everyone enjoying music in whatever way they can, but a lot of the content doesn't exude joy in creating music, at least not in my view.

I'd love to see more "content" (and I'm not on Tik Tok) like playingforchange.com, a lot of people collaborating to make beautiful, joyful sound.  Want a great start to your day? Go to that website, search The Weight and enjoy Ringo Starr leading folks all over the world in that song.

Do you listen to Leonid & Friends on YouTube? Even the band Chicago isvery complimentary of Leonid and his large group of friends. The YouTube videos tend to be done in studios but the band will be touring the US this fall.
