If any of you have read any of my other posts or book reviews you know Roy Rogers played a big part in my life as my boyhood ideal.   I found this picture the other day of Roy and Dale Evans with Roy's sisters and his parents.  His mom suffered with polio, which also added to his workload as he grew up in the backwoods of Ohio.  He use to talk about how the only entertainment the family had was singing and playing musical instruments (his folks taught him to play several instruments).  When I saw his mother holding that guitar her fingers said this wasn't necessarily a posed picture that this old gal could bang out a song on that instrument.

I think you show wear it and post a picture @Dave White, you know the rules, if there isn't a recording or a picture it didn't happen.

With a couple exceptions I gave all my items to Roy for his museum and they went from the Apple Valley site to Branson museum.  And even showed up on the auction when the site closed.  I bid on a couple items but they went for more than I could ever afford.  My name was on the items etc. Roy always tried to be true to his fans and to know that some selected items went all the way to the closure was a great satisfaction to me.  I do have a train Roy liked and bought at antique store and Sandy (Roy's youngest son) Bible ... all the family signed for me.  Great family.  I will post pictures in a little bit.  Since that seems to be the policy :)

Sadly, it is a bit on the small side for me now. Anyway, I have never been a guy that looked good in fringe. :)

I was a Roy Rogers fan when I was a boy. I named my first pony "Trigger," and here he is. Trigger.thumb.jpg.e20124c575f8e6d579f48106b902feb2.jpg

With a great deal of pride the Sons of the Pioneers announce that Dusty Rogers and John Fullerton will be joining the group. Trail Boss Tommy Nallie said, “We are lucky to have these two very talented individuals who have such a life-time commitment to the music of the Pioneers. We’ve always had a direct musical link back to the group’s beginning and now we have a personal one.” John performed as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist in Dusty’s “Roy Rogers, Jr. and the High...

From when  I was about 5 yrs. old, I still have my "Roy Rogers" holster set... sadly the "silver" cap guns with "pearl handles"  got worn out and discarded after hundreds of shots... brown furry cow hide with "silver" and "jewel" adornments.. western was all the rage in the "50's"  I have a vague recollection of a vest and hat to match... long gone... oh well;

Happy Trails!

O.K. I have to breakdown and put up my young pictures.  That was my first guitar ... only wished I had had the support to play it then that I receive now.

I too was a Roy Rogers fan, had a whole herd of "stick horses" made from Yucca plants in southern New Mexico.  I used to pit RR against Gene Autry to see who gets to sit by Dale,  the good ole days!

I'm not sure why they would have been in Omaha but I met Roy Rogers and, more importantly, Trigger when I was young.  As I understand it Roy Rogers would often take Trigger to hospitals to visit sick kids.  We have the "Boys Town" of movie fame here.  Maybe Roy and Trigger were doing some sort of similar visit here for the resident boys.  But that would have been quite the trip to haul Trigger that far from Hollywood to Nebraska!  They must have opened it up to the public because my mother took me to see them.  One of those "etched in" memories of my youth.

Aren't memories great?  I met Trigger and he was a real gentle horse and I fell in love with him.  I then met Gene's Champion. He was staying at one of my friends ranch while Gene was in town. He was mean and tried to nip at me.  It wasn't until I was an adult that I understood why he behaved that way ... how would you like a thousand little hands grabbing at you as you walked down the street.  I have had enough horses and dogs over the years that some will stand for anything and some don't play well with others.  The Champ I met didn't play well with others.

In 1954 I reported to my first ship in San Diego, and Hwy 101, the Pacific Coast highway of its day, ran north along the coast. About half-way to L.A. at San Juan Capistrano there was a wicked curve, and a bus carrying children crashed with fatal results. Roy and Dale adopted several children, and as I recall some of the victims were among their adoptees. Good old Leonard Slye and his wife were wonderful people. Gene Autry didn’t like Roy because Roy claimed the title “King of the Cowboys,” and Gene was jealous. During the forties, the Saturday matinees with Western cowboys were favorite attractions. We didn't much care for Roy because he had girls in his movies; I was more of a Charles Starett, aka "The Durango Kid," fan although I didn't have the slightest idea where Durango was--and I still don't. Lotsa luck.

When I was 5 in 1965, we got our first working toillet (before that a 5gal bucket for the cold days or the "house " 300 feet in the Bush.)

Also in 1965 we got our first TV with 1 whole channel (CBC)

I know there was hockey night in canada but I didn't watch that. I knew Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights.

In 1967 I saw my first working bath tub drain (ours you scooped the water in and out with a bucket)

Wasn't till 1974 when we moved to the big city I found Star Trek (already 7 years into re-runs)

Can't really tell you anything of Roy Roger's or his "Trigger" man side kick. Nothing about Howdy Doody Time or barely anything about Leave it to Beaver, except it was Lumpy's fault.

I have no idea where they got it.  It was used when I got it and traded it in for a Gibson 125, but I have always wondered what it was.

He shows up with the guitar everywhere.  Not sure which movie this is from ... he is probably with the Sons of the Pioneers and backing up Gene Autry or Charles Starrett.
