Read the Words of Guitar Wisdom in my signature link. Steve talks about it Steve says starting out it's a new skill and you can learn either direction. One thing is, choice. Stores gave billions of what's called right handed guitars (fretted left, strum right), but very little choice for left handed guitars

Correct position while playing
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Linders's topic in Guitar Playing & Technique
@Linders I play with a strap standing or sitting.. if I'm sitting and want to stand it can without stopping playing and same if I'm standing I can sit. but my guitar is "on tight" as they say which is mid chest level.. my arms are not long enough to have a long strap and play with the guitar at my knees like Slash does. (and we know who is more cooler,, me or Slash) second.. do not use a chair with arms, like an office chair.. some circumstances the arms of the chair will get in your way. if you do have an office chair you might want to remove it's arms, if you're on a couch, you'll need to move to the edge and might need a slight twist sideways to get the guitar to drop to a good playing position. if you're reclining back on the couch.. it might be a bit tough in such a position if you're not used to it. another problem that beginners have is trying to hold the guitar steady by the neck; and since the fretting hand is constantly moving so will feel the guitar. what you might find is the forearm of the strumming/picking hand holds the body of the guitar to your chest/stomach and only the picking hand needs to move next strap location , I find if I have to tie the guitar strap off at the top of the neck (and the other is on the strap button at the end) even I fight the guitar from sliding around back . I found the best position for strap buttons is either at the top of the horn (aka Strat or Les Paul location) or at the front of the neck joint.. ES style guitars like Gibson's ES335 or my Epiphone Sheraton and Gibson SG has the strap button at the base of the neck pointing backwards.. this just makes the guitar want to flop forwards. so that's a different factor so to is a Ovation style guitar with those fiberglass bowled backs slide all over the place we guitarists are resourceful though, if we want something badly enough we learn to play around with positioning and such to make it work look at classical players , hardly ever play with a strap. guitar neck pointed to the sky at all times remember there is no right or wrong. your body make up is different than ours to a certain extent and we had to find what's comfortable for us. some use straps all the time like me, some hardly every use a strap like NeilES335, Slash has his guitar at his knees, Liona Boyd has her guitar pointing to the ceiling. Roy Clark had his guitar high up his chest.. we make it work. -

@NeilES335 so I finally was able to shutdown Reaper and give your track a serious listen through (put it on repeat while typing this). sounds like you have the melody sitting just about the right level above the rhythm, and the melody is clear bell like tone over the more gritty rhythm , timing seem pretty good between the tracks, as the melody holds the phrasing it the next chord round for it to join back in. Think you're finding your 'recording' stride as each one sound just a bit more polished over the last. Think once Spot One L&M night comes back and Collingwood Jam Night starts back up .. you have a good handful to play live now. -
Carter's, Rumble Seat and Gruhn's are almost sitting on top of each other in the same stretch of 1.5 miles .

Guitar to PA Questions
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Mike Hoodenpyle's topic in Guitar Gear, Amps, Effects, Pedals
@Mike Hoodenpyle all the stuff I read about on DI boxes (besides Radial J48 being pretty much the best) is everyone writes "acoustic guitar" Even though my search says "for electric " Since you have the Fishman Platinum Pro EQ, (it's a very well made unit), I think if I was you, I'd throw on my blues driver pedal and my reverb pedal in a very small pedal board bag and give it a try. Think you might be surprised it sounds good -

Guitar to PA Questions
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Mike Hoodenpyle's topic in Guitar Gear, Amps, Effects, Pedals
@Mike Hoodenpyle @NeilES335 sorry this might be a long post. I'll start with an easy answer first.. a Headphone jack only puts out a few milliwatts of power regardless of the power of the amp. that's why a set of headphones works in a cell phone the same way a mp3 player to your Boss Katana.. it's not quite a 'line-level' out but it suffices to the headphones and a board. so you could have a 1,000 w amp or a 1w amp.. headphone out is regulated to keep people from going fully deaf an run around 10 to 20 mw average. next.. wow.. I'm jealous .. we have no in the ear monitors (although pointless for someone with hearing aids), no sound guy.. I'm in a Roman Catholic Church which is a lot different setting than the "USA's" Christian churches with 'praise bands', only full bands I've seen up here are usually in a Baptist church . depending on the priest that's in my church we're pretty 'locked down' as to what we can do. we do have some 'freedom' but a full praise rock band wouldn't be tolerated by the congregation let lone the priest . each of our 'choirs' run themselves, I was a 'dedicated' sound guy for the choir I'm in plus kid wrangler, now I'm still the sound guy.. but I'm mixing while I'm playing and yes .. still kid wrangler.. talk about multi-tasking I play 98% acoustic patched straight into the board,, with one exception I use a Fishman Platinum EQ. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PlatinumPro--fishman-platinum-pro-eq-di-analog-preamp-pedal I wanted a Fishman Aura Spectrum DI.. Like the Krenz run's but I was bidding on a pedal I thought was the Aura.. but wasn't only the Pro EQ.. which turns out doesn't do to bad as a DI out and EQ (with built in compressor) so I plug into the EQ, and the EQ DI out goes to the board. no wah, no distortion, no chorus effects. me; my hands before God and something like 300~1200 people. (when church is back in session.) back to you. you don't state whether you're on acoustic or electric or the need to ever need to be heard via a speaker or the need for effects like Wah, Chorus , delay, distortion , etc , esp in your travels. so would a Katana mini be right for your.. possibly; since it would give you a speaker when needed but if it was me and I know that I wasn't going to need a speaker. then you have some choices. Pod.. yes a Pod will act as a DI.. it has a ton of amp models, effects, etc.. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PocketPOD--line-6-pocket-pod-guitar-amp-emulator I'm not a big fan of the sound of amp modeling in these little pocket rig's.. many are. and there are some there on this forum that are.. if it was me.. and doing my pocket pedal over.. I would pick up what Steve Krenz has used Fishman Aura Spectrum DI https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AuraSpectDI--fishman-aura-spectrum-di-imaging-pedal-with-di these are great for acoustic guitars (besides the EQ box like I run listed above) and have effects to taylor the type of guitar in mind. you can even run out of either Fishman listed or the POD.. into a portable PA speaker or a busker amp if needed a speaker as well don't need a big PA patch board. if using an electric.. you'll probably be looking more towards a POD as they are geared towards Electric players that want all sorts of Amp's , speaker cab's, effects and is EQ'd more towards a Electric Guitar than an acoustic. -

Working with TrueFire Jeff McErlain's Blues Solo course for a while.. Hacking out his licks and have a few more to do before getting around to the main LMG course again. never could get the delay set the way I wanted, but it was an exercise to get the string bending better . (no doubt way too much delay. call it players choice 😉 ) it's supposed to be in the style of Pink Floyd David Gilmour-ish lick that Jeff created, not any specific Floyd song. always more work to be done with the little time I get. -
Spiral Bound Song Hits Lesson Book
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Night Watchman's topic in Learn & Master Song Hits
@Jogarman because Steve had to deal with rights issues of the Songs in the Song Hits no PDF was released. If any one has one, its because they scanned to orginal book, It would technically be illegal for them to email you a copy You might want to contact Legacy to purchase , but I would suspect they'll want you to buy the complete course. -
singing while playing guitar
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Jogarman's topic in Guitar Playing & Technique
@Popeye I respectfully disagree with your must know it all by rote recall. every "all the words and the beat and the rhythm" + "Know all the chords, melody, riffs" If this was the case I would never be able to play 1 song let alone 155 songs we do every year in choir. . we have to read the chord blocks ahead and we have to sing on beat. and the songs change per church season. yes I needed to come close to this when I'm leading/directing the choir, where I'm watching the timing of the priest, listing to where 10+ kids are in the lyrics, listing to where my 16yr old piano player is in her melody line, and listing to any other musician playing with me , plus my own playing.. and yes we're reading the lyrics and watching the chord blocks and/or melody. @Jogarman said he's in Session 11 which is a 'very high level' of LMG to be in. but he also said "I would like to be able to sing while playing chords and rhythms and simple solo melodies" he didn't say he was going to be on stage trying to recreate a multi-layered track with no music in front of him .. he wants to have "keys / hints" to do a simple strum n sing. this is what some people refer to as a "camp fire" playing.. you strum and sing and everyone else sings along. singing "in key" comes from hearing your voice along with playing, and comparing how badly you're not in tune with the guitar.. but you have to have sound come out of your mouth first -
singing while playing guitar
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Jogarman's topic in Guitar Playing & Technique
@Jogarman I do lots of singing and playing in church (155 songs per year... except this year) .. styles of playing are open for me but we generally stick to strumg'n'sing as heard in the GG Open mic section.. and some finger style.. no Jimmi Hendrix stuff so here's my approach everyone and their brother knows the chorus and usually most of the 1st verse.. BUT 2nd and 3rd verses,, almost nobody knows of any song. so you're going to need the music in front of you. 1st.. Know the chords at least 80%+ to be able to glance at the chord block coming up and know.. OK.. I'm on a C and a G is coming up.. you gotta know what's next. remember important rule #1.. the strumming had does not stop for you to find the next chord.. you have to be on the next chord when it comes. as I said in someone else's post here in GG when they asked about rests in the music and if you mute the strings while strumming (I don't think they liked my answer) a rest in the music doesn't apply to strumming. .a rest in the music is a non-strummed chord , it doesn't mean you have to mute the strings.. the strings continue to ring through the mute/rested notes. remember rule #1.. the strumming hand does not stop. otherwise you'll have a very choppy sound of a song. 2nd you're reading the lyrics and glancing up at the chord blocks, so you know ok.. at the end of this bar I'm going to the next chord but you're continuing to read the lyrics. number 2 gets tricky if you've got multiple verse lines stacked under them.. I have a few songs that there are 7+ verses.. and jumping to line 4 quickly in each measure is.. .. .. tricky. did I say know the chords of the song 80%+? some songs.. like Taking Care of Business.. I can sing without looking at the lyrics , but my church songs.. nope.. I gotta read the lyrics, play the chords. many of my songs will have a chord a beat as well. so that's lots of chords per song. Notice.. when your favorite guitar hero is playing.. they are not doing fancy note runs while singing.. 99% of them are doing chords as a "comp" for them to sing.. their playing is not 'up-staging' the singing.. if there is a solo part within the song.. it's not during vocals, so learn to just chord the solo section while not singing so you can get the singing/playing part down.. then work on adding the solo after you get the song sounding good. -
Can you burn pickups when soldering input?
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Azaxa's topic in Guitar Care, Repair & Building
ok so part 2 of trouble shooting.. so you have a multi meter. and need to see if signal is getting from the pickup out the cable. so you've plugged you cable in.. follow the wire from the tip of the cable that's in the output jack.. follow it back to probably the selector switch.. one probe on that cable . the other end on the guitar cable.. does it read 0? might as well check on the guitar cable side. but Tip and Sleeve , one should be 0 and the other infinite. yes then you know you didn't melt down the connector.. if it's still at infinite , then you know you have an open.. it would be hard to believe that more than 1 pick up is dead in a multi pickup guitar.. the common part is the selector switch (which is prone to oxidation and dust.. ) contact cleaner like Dioxit is good for spraying on it and rocking the switch back and forth. last I would disconnect the pickups from the volume pots and check their ohms. single coil typical below 5k.. humbuckers can range from 6k to 20k ohms last if you want to by pass the pots and tone caps and the selector switch.. solider the (hopefully) 2 wires from the pickup The shield and the signal .. straight to the output connector. this will give you full volume and tone, bypassing any of the rest of the electronic signal -
Can you burn pickups when soldering input?
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Azaxa's topic in Guitar Care, Repair & Building
Well soldering the input jack "shouldn't " wreck the pickups as the input jack would normally be connected to the selector switch and not the pickups. First if you want to continue to work on your guitar you're going to need better soldiering iron. When you go to solder on the pots, you need to get off them as fast as possible. The correct way to check the pickups is to test their ohms, which you'd need to desolder from the pots to check the impedance properly. I would guess off the top (without seeing it) is you swapped the tip and sleeve connections . That would connect ground to the signal line. Next cooking the input jack possible the you melted the insulation in the jack. If you have a ohm meter. Insert the guitar cable into the guitar Put one probe on the wire that goes to the tip of on the connector. Next take your other probe, connect it to the other end of the guitar cable You are checking for continuity from input jack to the other end of the cable Theres more but I'll stop typing -

Eracer_Team-DougH replied to Wim VD1's topic in Learn & Master Fingerstyle Guitar
@Wim VD1 certainly better than I've played this tune.. I sort of found it a 'fun' tune but never put the time into it to make it worth sounding well (do I ever?) I don't play well enough to comment, except to say. very good. -
I went to 10-48's on my acoustic.
Eracer_Team-DougH replied to matonanjin's topic in Guitar Gear, Amps, Effects, Pedals
Let's remember the other Billy Gibson video when his guitar tech sampled his 59 "Pearily Gates" Les Paul on his effects processor, then after that didn't mater which guitar Billy played, low output single to 22k ohm humbucker, they all had same output to amp. I moved my Strat to 10's from the initial 9's prefer the 10's on it, sounded fuller not thin and tiny. Haven't looked back -

Let's just say I love the tone of my Gibson Les Paul. But I did buy it from the store used, but it was older and used, tone got me, not a choice of build qc Heritage Guitars is close to being sued by Gibson for contract infringement. They're breaking their 1982 contract This keeps popping up on my Facebook, don't know much about them but seem like a quality build https://deanzelinsky.com I still say hold tight, wait till the stores open and hold the one you love -

If you're relying on GC online delivery I'd say save your money Because GC has a pretty good return policy in first handful of days, I read about people return , return return, and everyone of those returns gets put back up as new. When the stores open, go in and find the one that talks to you Also reading on the Gibson forum some of the returns are for ridiculous reasons -
