Hi everybody!  I'm here.  Officially, legally?, I'll be here in a couple days.  I'm finishing up the play along songs at the end of 16 over the next couple days but since I had logged in thought I would pre-announce🤔

Like Neil, I am doing some review.  I've gone back and am restudying pentatonic scales.  I have the patterns down but just can't seem to get the location of the root note for each box ingrained.  I'm going to keep reviewing until I do. And many of us have used Hal Leonard's book on Barre Chords to complement our studies on that.  I have found that book and am working the exercises.  I am going to go through all of those until I get through "Layla" toward the end.

But I digress. Wish me luck on getting up there in the "dusty" area of the fretboard!

Hey Ron, an early congratulations for finishing session 16! And all the best up there in the dusty area.

I haven't contributed to this recording challenge for quite a while. I have been refreshing my memory on recording skills lately so this is an attempt to put something out here.I could have tracked the downbeat much better  here ( I pride myself in following the snare well in live play with the band) and I sound a bit ridiculous trying to sing angry an octave lower than Delores ( couldn't match her high notes in her octave or easily her Irish lilt/yodel) , the lead singer of the Cranberries, so please forgive my meager attempt. I was tempted to bury it in the mix. My kids kept me current with their musical interests as they grew up. I am a sucker for heavy fuzz though I had a hard time matching the original here. Probably need to stick to clean from here on out. I downloaded a Karoake version that had several tracks that I could isolate and try to learn...many tracks, overdubs and redos, but the actual parts are relatively easy to learn. I used the drums and bass from the download and put in a little synth pad at the end . Just hard to put together to any satisfaction on my part. I ran out of gas trying to improve the production so for better or worse.....

    Greg

Greg, this is a great rendition. I like that you recorded the complete song with several instruments and singing. It sounds really good.

The song is very catchy. After listening to your recording, it stayed on my mind for the rest of the day 😀

My submission for this recording challenge is Long Ago and Far Away, a jazz standard from 1944, from the movie Cover Girl, staring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly.  The song was made famous by Jo Stafford.  I recorded the rhythm and then the melody.  Thanks,

Well played, Skip. That is a sweet tune.

I hope you like like this snip of Jolene I did it with my mandolin.

    Jolene.caf 8.46 MB · 9 downloads

That was nice. I never tried mandolin but like to see this monthly challenge expand to include other instruments.

I would love to learn the fingerstyle riff of this great song.

  5. @Steve Krenz

Steve, could you advise me on how to build and especially maintain a repertoire of songs? I am learning about 2 new songs per month, but soon after recording them, I focus on the next new ones and forget the ones learned previously. So how could I best put the maintenance of repertoire in my weekly practice schedule? Should I have one "repertoire day" per week?
    Thanks, Wim.

  6. @Strings, @NeilES335, @pkotof, @Simira,

Thanks for your very kind words.

Learning and playing guitar has become a true passion and learning songs is for me the real goal. It's such a great feeling when after hours and hours of practice, you finally get the feeling to "own" a song.

What I have learned as well over the years is to trust the process. I was not good at playing fingerstyle when I started the fingerstyle course back in december last year, and it looked like a huge mountain to climb. But @Steve Krenz Steve's courses are so well made to gradually and steadily grow your skills. I am now confident that if I do the fingerstyle exercises, e.g. the Giuliani drills, for a couple of weeks, it will affect my playing and enable me to finally tackle those difficult moves in some classic Spanish song, that looked daunting in the beginning.

This trust in the process helps me each time to overcome my initial frustration when learning something new.

So yes, it's about practice, patience and persistence, but these would be useless without a great teacher like Steve with a great method.

Here is me playing "La Isla Bonita" which was written by Madonna, Patrick Leonard and Bruce Gatisch and sung by Madonna. My apologies to all music lovers and people who speak Spanish!

No need to apologize, It is very enjoyable and well recorded.

    Thanks for runnning the challenge!

  8. Congratulations, @Limatje.

I am in session 5 now (classical guitar) and the exercises and songs become gradually more complicated as I move through the course.

It's a great course because it contains so many beautiful songs. Playing solo fingerstyle arrangements is very rewarding.

    Greatings back from Belgium 😀

Hi guys, I hope you and families are all safe and well.  Here is a fingerstyle rendition of 'I Will Always Love You', written and recorded by the fabulous Dolly Parton and also sung by the wonderful Whitney Houston.  This arrangement is from Hal Leonards '100 most Beautiful Songs for Fingerpicking Guitar'. Stay Safe😊  (may sound better through headphones).

Well played, @Simira. You get a wonderful tone out of your guitar!

I love Dolly Parton. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was watching the documentary "Here I am" on Netflix where I learned to story behind the song. She wrote it for Porter Wagoner when they broke up professionally and she went solo.

    Thanks for sharing.

Kevin, that's a fantastic rendition of a great song. I listened several times with earphones and your harmonies gave me  goose bumps. Your guitar playing sounds beautiful and the song is very well recorded.

    Thanks for sharing. Great job!

Wow, yours must be the soonest first entry we have ever had!😁

That was lovely Wim, I really enjoyed it. 😎👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thanks Mandy, is there a special award for the fastest entry 😀?

I had 2 new recordings ready, this one and a fingerstyle blues. I just had to figure out which one I could somehow match to the theme of the month 😎.

  12. Danny Boy has been performed by many great female artists like Mahalia Jackson, Johan Baez, Judy Garland and Sinead O'Connor, but it is the version of Eva Cassidy, accompanied by acoustic guitar, that is my favorite.

The arrangement I learned over the past weeks is from Steve's L&M Fingerstyle course session 4.

    Thanks for listening,

    Wim.
