Hello All,

I am thinking about getting a Focusrite Scarlett and then some time in the future getting a Boss Ve2 vocal harmonist so that I can make video recordings of me singing and playing guitar at the same time.  The Boss VE2 does not process the guitar signal but outputs it separately. If I plug the guitar output from the Boss into 1 Scarlett port and the vocal output into the other port would that work?

Thank you folks, have a great weekend.

Make sure you buy a two-channel Focusrite Scarlett, ie. 2i2 or 2i4. You can record your mic through one input (one channel) and the guitar through the other. Avoid the Focusrite Scarlett Solo as it is a one-channel audio interface.

@Nutty 1, I don't see on your link where there is a separate guitar output.  I see an XLR, USB and phones/line.  But either way, yes, it should work.  As @Fretless suggested, get the 2i2 so that you have 2 inputs.  I'm sure that you're correct, the product outputs the guitar separately so you will need the two inputs.  But even if it doesn't, the difference in cost between the Scarlett Solo and 2i2 is so little, it looks like £24, it's silly to not get the extra input.

Focusrite makes great products.

Thank you @Fretless and @matonanjin for your sage advice. I will definitely not get the solo. I will look at the 2i2 and 2i4 models and see what they go for.

@Nutty 1 If you dont already have a good mic and recording (closed back ) headphones, I'd recommend this bundle ; the Scarlet 2i2, mic and phones for https://www.andertons.co.uk/focusrite-scarlett-2i2-studio-2nd-generation

I second the motion... the Scarlet 2i2 is only 28 GBP more than the Solo. It's definitely worth it... the Solo will be somewhat restrictive.

@Nutty 1 you might want to read Neil's "rabbit hole" with ProTools, and just download Free Reaper to start off with a DAW

Yeah, there's a guitar in and out on the back.  I just watched the demo, and it can use the guitar signal to adjust the harmonies.  So Nutty may play with that function.  If she gets good enough harmonies by just setting the key of the song, she may not even want to run the guitar through the unit.  That's probably what I would do - have XLR in and out of the Boss and then through to input 1 on a Scarlett, then guitar direct into input 2 on the Scarlett.  So as to Nutty's original question, yes whether you run the guitar through the Boss or not, you'd be recording two (vocal & guitar) separate tracks.

Thank you for the tip  @Eracer_Team-DougH I will not download the Pro Tools. I will probably wimp out and keep using my Garageband.?

Thank you @CapM for your advice. I am going to have to really learn to play and sing (and both at the same time ?).  Buying this kit is my incentive to stick at it! If I can train myself to sing on key then the harmonies will be great!
