Mini Guitar Gathering 2020
matonanjin replied to Dave White's topic in Guitar Gathering Conferences & Retreats
@Dave White thank you for finishing the story. That is one gorgeous guitar. And I'm sure it sounds as great as it looks. I hope we hear a recording with it soon to confirm that. -
Mini Guitar Gathering 2020
matonanjin replied to Dave White's topic in Guitar Gathering Conferences & Retreats
@Dave White what a great, fun trip, a mini-conference, this had to be. I am appropriately envious. Since it made me so envious, I'm not sure that I'm appreciative. But I'll say it as a formality, "Thanks for sharing". 😉 🤣 (Of course, kidding) One part of your story was left unfinished however! "I think Collin and I played about every sinker OM in the store." What were the sinkers like? And, far and away most importantly, did anyone go home with one?!?! The concept of making a guitar from wood that had been submerged for nearly a century is just fascinating to me. And I have heard multiple raving about how the sinker guitars sound amazing. For anyone not familiar with the "sinker" guitars story, a lot of mahogany from Central America sunk in rivers on the way to sawmills. Mr. Gruhn somehow acquired all of this "sinker" wood. The full story is here. So Dave?!!? Are we going to soon see a NGD post for a sinker guitar?🤔 If not, can you give us more details about your impression of them? -
I'm sorry. I should have given more than 30 minutes notice. I got the email about this earlier but didn't think to share until now. Jeff McErlain's weekly "Brooklyn Lockdown" YouTube lesson today is titled "Peter Green - Playing the Changes Pt 1". The Part 1 perhaps indicates there will be another part next week which you can catch live. For now you should be able to catch Part 1 on the replay. Beyond a nice tribute I suspect it will be educational.

There was a really nice tribute article in Premier Guitar. "Green’s catalog of ’66 to ’70 remains a necessary touchstone for any guitarist seriously interested in exploring foundational British blues—or, simply, blues. Examined chronologically, it illustrates his evolution from hard-core traditionalist to a composer capable of both deep introspection (“Man of the World”) and psychedelic experimentalism (“The Green Manalishi”)."

Spark - Smart Practice Guitar Amp
matonanjin replied to matonanjin's topic in Guitar Gear, Amps, Effects, Pedals
Mandy, after you have worked with it for a while give us a review, please. I heard lots of grumbling on some other forums about the shipping delays. But the ones that have received it seem to sing very positive praise. -
I hadn't heard of his passing so thank you for posting this. His playing was always so soulful and moving. Probably no song of his demonstrates that soulfulness more than "Supernatural". It will always be my favorite of his. Wim, very well played and just a nice tribute.

🤦♀️18 Songs people always ask guitarists to play 🤦♂️

Yep, Henk. And this is reflected in the fact that I have never heard of a few on here!😮🤔😬 -
I need to learn the technique of tuning by ear.
matonanjin replied to Prabhu's topic in Guitar Playing & Technique
I'm not sure how to answer you as far as how it's different. but someone above mentioned, I think, a Snark tuner, which has somewhat become the standard for a "clip on tuner". A very cheap alternative to the Snark, and the phone app mentioned is a Reverb tuner. Really cheap. $5. Although I don't know what the shipping will be for you. I have one clipped on my guitar right now. -
I need to learn the technique of tuning by ear.
matonanjin replied to Prabhu's topic in Guitar Playing & Technique
I think there are quite a few of us on here that accurately describes! Including my self in that group🤣☹️ Yep, "there's an app for that"! It is an economical solution and from my very limited observation seems accurate. I use one called Guitar Tuna. It's a handy little tuner and also has a metronome and a chord library. -
Steve is teaching a guitar training workshop for band directors and so there will be no Live Lesson tonight. But he said we would be back next week. So let's all use this time tonight for practicing! No slacking off!!😮 No TV!😉 I'm going to be working on this one really cool blues rhythm. Kind of a funky thing. And I've gone back and am re-working on pentatonic scales. What about everyone else?

Playing while wearing hearing aids

@Oldjock, I need hearing aid but keep putting them off. Your audiologist makes me sound like Carlos Santana and I am making an appointment with her and buying an airline ticket same day😮😄😎 -

Guys, thanks for adding to the thread. I should have mentioned in my op, and you guys probably know, Charlie is famous for playing his fiddle. But he definitely knows his way around the fretboard on his Les Paul!

How many times did I listen to "The Devil Goes Down to Georgia"? It's hard to say; but a lot! Coincidentally, I just watched part of a concert with him last week on AXS tv. 'What a hero': Charlie Daniels mourned by Luke Combs, Meghan McCain, Luke Bryan, more stars

Really nice job Neil. Great playing. -
Grammy winning guitarist, Larry Carlton, introduced a ground-breaking way to visualize chords for soloing and comping called the Super Arpeggio. Tonight, Steve will break down this important concept and show you how to apply it to create more innovative musical ideas. On Wednesday evening, we'll begin a helpful new guitar workout series on the Chords You Need to Know. If your chord playing is holding you back, then bring your guitar and join us! Two exciting events - Tuesday Live Lesson and a Wednesday Guitar Workout! View both events at the Guitar Gathering YouTube Channel. You must be logged into YouTube to ask questions.

Beautiful, Mike! That is one of my favorite PRS finishes. Enjoy that guitar a long time.

I didn't know how to title this post or even how to describe them. I wasn't even sure whether to stick it here or in the "Technique" subforum. His weekly YT videos aren't about technique. There is no discussion about how a flattened 7th gives the groove a blues sound or such theoretical or technique points . No, in fact the title of this video is probably representative of his discussions, "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Don't Swing". His videos are always, what I will call, fun, philosophical, historical rants. He calls his videos "nerdy" and they probably are, to an extent. Every one is filled with names that I wish I had the time to purse. This one is no exception. Billy Preston, Cornell Dupree, James Gadson, Mike Landau, Wah Wah Watson are just a few he references this time. This time he stresses the importance of becoming a "crate digger" and you'll have to watch this to find out what that means. I don't need to convince anyone what a monster player he is. Joe Bonamassa calls him one of the greatest players he has seen and had him on (I think) the Three Kings Tour. I got a chance to meet Kirk and talk with him on two of the Keeping The blues Alive at Sea cruise. We had even talked about a possible lesson on the ship but, for reasons I won't go into, I backed out. He always is as jovial and happy as he seems on here. These videos are always short, 10 or so minutes, so not a huge time investment. And I think you will enjoy.

Mike, congratulations on the new PRS. I hope the information provided by a few of us here helped with your decision. And looking forward to the NGD post and "real" photos.

Mandy, thank you. I don't know anything about Vicki other than I have seen her name as an artist over at Truefire. She has some number of acoustic courses there. I, from time to time, think about trying some open tunings and she has a course or two on that. If I ever proceed with trying that I'm going to seriously look at her course.

@pkotof and @NeilES335, thanks for resuscitating this thread. I don't have the DVD so I didn't get to see the interviews. but I watched it, probably on YouTube, and really enjoyed it. And yeah, Neil, Tal was sensational. Showtime has a documentary about him, "Jeff Beck: Still on the Run". It is really interesting. Lots of interviews with Tal, and his other bass player, (I can't remember her name), and Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, Slash, and Joe Perry. The doc also spends time about his passion for American Hot Rods. If you're a Beck fan it is an hour and a half really well spent.

Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Guitar just sold for over $6,000,000. According to the article this is now the newest record for a guitar sold at auction. But it did come with a half full pack of extra stings and 3 Dunlap picks! It is a Martin D-18E. Some of you have probably seen a post or two of mine about my looking for a Martin acoustic. The article states that Juliens will not disclose who had the winning bid. I will tell you that is was not me.😎😄
