  1. I agree with this, if all you are looking to do is record yourself for now. The Zoom Q2N is an excellent little device for the price. At $150, it sound amazing and records decent video as well. If all you want to do is record audio though, Zoom also makes an attachment that plugs right into your iPhone. The iQ6 is $100 though. If you don't want to bother with your phone, Zoom also makes a stand alone recording device, also for $100. The H1N. It might be cool for you to look around the Zoom website and see if anything there excites you enough to invest in. They have great audio/video recording products. And, no, I don't work for Zoom! 😀
  2. As a quick update, I am working through putting the Tru-Oil protective top coat on the flame veneer. It is taking FOREVER as each layer is taking a few days to totally cure enough to sand. The first full layer I put on took a full week as the veneer absorbed a lot of it so I had to put super thin layers, one a time until it stopped absorbing and started building up a coat. I put up pictures here and there on my IG at oldguysguitarvlog if you want to take a look.
  3. Wow, does this bring back memories. If anyone doesn't have "Passion And Warfare" go get it NOW! That and "Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriana basically kicked off the instrumental rock genre almost 30 years ago. Steve Vai's genius was recognized by the late Frank Zappa, who hired him to not only play for his band when he was 18, but to transcribe his whole catalog BY EAR. Amazing stuff. I had the original 30 hour work out article in Guitar World magazine from 1990! I just got the Vaideology book this week and it is really great. Will do a review on my YouTube channel soon if people are interested.
  4. Yes, sir! I grew up in Cote St. Luc. The Jazz/Blues scene back then was insane. Every weekend you could find places with jam nights and cut your teeth with some of Montreal's best. It was crazy. I used to jam with this guy, Jimmy James, who now headlines blues night at the International Jazz Festival every summer in Montreal. They call him a "legend" now, LOL. It was very cool.
  5. This is a cover by a brilliant and extraordinarily talented young crew, of an equally extraordinarily and talented Jazz Fusion trio, UZEB. I was so fortunate to grow up in Montreal at a time when there was an absolutely incredible Jazz and Blues scene going. I saw UZEB a few times live at the local Jazz club, and it was mind blowing and life altering for a young kid who loved guitar and guitar music. And UZEB were light years ahead of their time when they burst onto the scene in the late 70s. I saw them towards the end of their run in the early 90s. Just amazing stuff.
  6. My daughter and I are planning to go. I can't wait!!
  7. Confucius says; it is not the tool, but the wielder (he didn't, but I'm just following the theme of the poster!). 😀 Don't focus on the gear. As the great Frank Zappa said, "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar!"
  8. I bought this the other day and had high hopes it would be a decent way to play with good sounds into my Mac to just record some ideas and have fun. Basically, what it is, is an interface that lets you use all the presets from any of the Zoom multi-effects pedal units available. Plug your guitar into the interface, interface into your Mac/PC, use the free downloadable software to manipulate the presets/effects, and use headphones to play. For $100, I figured I would give it a try. Now something I only considered after the fact, was that I was coming from an Axe Fx II, although I wasn't expecting close to that quality of presets. I was expecting it to be usable, though. I plugged it in and tried about 200 different presets, and couldn't find not even one that was pleasing to my ears. Very digital sounding, and even the clean presets were clipping all over the place. It sounded like the noise gates and compression of each preset were waaaaay off. One reason for this is that these presets are really meant to be used in a live setting, out of speakers. Listening in headphones is another sound altogether. I learned that very early in my digital gear days. You can't create a preset for live settings and expect to sound amazing in headphones. It just doesn't work that way. You always have to tweak things to get it to sound right. I didn't really buy the unit to spend ages tweaking each preset to make them workable. That's my fault, but jeez, the presets were TERRIBLE. I would have had to really go into the complex settings to "fix" them and make them workable. Sadly, it's going back. I'm quite disappointed as I've had great luck with Zoom products way back when, but this little unit is really not worth the effort. My Sweetwater rep recommended I try the Helix Stomp, but at $599, I wasn't spending that just to noodle around. My work around will be to record into my phone from the speaker on my little 15W practice amp when an idea strikes. I have my on little studio, so don't have to worry about recording silently much. Live and learn!
  9. Congrats on NGD and NAD!! Those are the best!! I'd love to hear what you think about the Silver Sky. I still haven't found one to try in my area. If you are in the market for a great tube amp later on, I'd highly recommend the Fender Bassbreaker 30R. It is absolutely incredible.
  10. I've played guitar for elderly in Nursing Homes and for young children in Pre-school. Always fun! It was just awesome to see how even people who don't move much suddenly start to boogie to music. Good stuff.
  11. This is the intro jam to my MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay video on YouTube. I recorded the backing track myself. It's a basic I-IV-V blues in E. Enjoy!
  12. I saw Robben Ford live many years ago and he was playing through his Dumble. It sounded great, BUT, to me, it's really just a bunch of corksniffing. It's more the mystery and romance of the brand than anything else. As someone already said, paying that kind of money for an amp is obscene. play what sounds good to you an d you can afford. The rest is just fodder for a good discussion!
  13. The Axe Fx III has an unbelievable Dumble ODS like amp in it.
  14. A Dumble that was used by Joe Bonamassa on one of his recordings sold on Reverb for $175K. That being said, if you check out the new line of Synergy products, they have modules created by Amp gurus to be used in their amp heads. A Dumble ODS module is expected in the next few months. Expected price of $1200.
  15. Awesome!! Man, I wish I could go... Would have loved to see Kirk Fletcher and Josh Smith on the roster.
  16. Wow...I hate that you put a disclaimer on there. Now I can't use this test to convince the wife I need more gear. Hmmmph. 😂
  17. Have you considered a Modeller of some kind? If you are looking to really streamline your rig, you can get a modeller that has both guitar and bass amps within and then use an FRFR active wedge to play through. Otherwise, there aren't any really good options out there.
  18. Thanks!! Funny enough, I JUST got a PRS SE Custom 24 Zebrawood, and was trying it through all the channels the other night. Clean channel with that guitar is very jazzy. I was LOVING it. The 1st Gain stage is very Allman Brothersish with the HB, and got it screaming on 2nd Gain Stage. Dialed back a bit on the volume pot and was getting that nice distorted Black Magic Woman tone. So far, this amp is really hitting it out of the park for me.
  19. Thank you!! I really love it. It is getting better by the day, tone wise.
