If I change the gauge of strings on my guitar, do I have to do a set on the guitar?

Hi John: If you are going up in gauge you would also have to file the nut to the proper size as not to have the strings bind, and I would do a setup since you are removing the strings. Try to get a copy of The Setup and Maintenance DVD that Greg did. It has a lot of information for you to do a setup. also look into taking his Setup and Maintenance class that he gives, I believe he does a class at the Guitar Gathering, and definitely does another in Nazareth PA. I took it there, it was excellent , I learned a lot from him. He does it at American Archtop / Nazareth Guitar Academy.

Thanks for the information. It will be a great help.  I was at the gathering last year and hope to make it this year.  I live in New Jersey so maybe I could catch Greg's class in PA.

It took me less then 1 1/2 hour to get there from Staten Island, should be a breeze from NJ. well worth the trip.

Greg's class on setups and fret dressings are so valuable!!

Hands on experience in a small group setting - doesn't get any better! :)

You might be able to change strings by one gauge and get away with it, but I would expect your truss rod might need a little tweak after the guitar settles down. You could get a set of feeler gauges and measure the neck relief before and after, to see how much it changed, and then adjust to your liking when you're done.

Sounds good. I'm only going to the next thinner gauge. Thanks!
