If you had told me 3 years ago I'd enjoy ukulele, I would have laughed or grimaced, recalling seeing Tiny Tim on TV as a child. Yet here I am enjoying that instrument. Our public library offers free checkouts of instruments and instruction, and their monthly ukulele circle motivated me to try it. I really enjoy it. The good thing about all the music I've gotten for the monthly circle is that the chords are the same as for guitar (the chords themselves, not the fingerings). For a more classical approach and some beautiful music that isn't "singable" I'm enjoying Arpeggio Meditations for Ukulele by Daniel Ward and his teaching videos. Mandolin could be next on the horizon.....my son-in-law recently started it. Beautiful instrument.

I'm not afraid of mistakes, but I am afraid of the shakes......that could be a blues tune! Maybe small groups of 3-4 people would amend the lack of performers? Thanks, Diane, for the great photo-journalism and your wit and clarity. Great stuff, fun to read.

Diane, I am so sorry to hear this. I feel for his family and for you.....and for other GG friends who knew him. Sudden shocks make a loss even harder to bear. Your writing and photos are a tribute for all to treasure.

Yes, Ericsson has been somewhat "debunked", for lack of a better word. In my sixties now, I want a balance of deliberate but also FUN. I'm hoping to get to a level where I can improv and enjoy it, keep up. THAT would be fun! I, too, enjoy studying music theory....just have trouble applying it sometimes. It's easier for me to picture a piano keyboard as I study it....the frets and multiple locations of the same note at the same pitch continually confound me! Kudos to you for studying theory on average 82 hours a year, or about 1.5 hours a week!

Doug, thanks for posting the L&M resources and Words of Wisdom in your signature, very helpful! L&M got me started in guitar. I want to resume it at Lesson 14 and finish.

And that log of hours practiced doesn't include on stage or jams, right?

Oldjock, give yourself a pat on the back for STARTING at 69! Diane, look at #5 again, WOW!! You certainly encourage me. I could kick myself for not putting in more time. Now that arthritis is hitting my hands, I especially regret it..... You should have added as an accomplishment all you do for this group, especially on our Tuesday nights together. Kudos to you! Steve Krenz (here on GuitarGathering) was my first exposure to guitar and I've never wavered from his instruction, great stuff. He generously gives his time AND great PDFs for lessons for all levels on electric and acoustic, all styles. As mentioned above, join us for the Tuesday lessons when they are given. But in the meantime subscribe to his YouTube channel where all lessons are archived......the first and last minutes of each lesson are not on YouTube and are focused on us GuitarGathering folks, so I'd encourage you to join live when you can. "Guitar Gathering" on YouTube. Best advice from Steve, which I'm finally following: practice at first without the computer or phone apps, just put in deliberate practice time, just you and your instrument. And from Justin: improv! Put on a song and try to play along or just jam, without worrying about getting it right. Have fun.......yet also spend most of your time in deliberate practice. Looks like Paul David and Kiko are geared toward electric guitar. Is that your main interest?

I won't be there this year but hoping for next year. Diane, I remember a similar post you made in 2018 was invaluably helpful as I was packing. Thanks for all the thorough, thoughtful information you provide.

Thank you so much Doug, Diane and "Fretless".....all very helpful and I'm ready to do some shopping and organizing now. The iPad video was interesting, and I'd been curious about how effective they are at storing music....thanks. I may go that route one day!

I don't have an I-pad. I do have a large piece of cardboard on my music stand to clip several sheets to so I can see all the pages at once. But what do I do with those sheets to store them? Starting to get a lot......my husband uses a porta-file with 26 spaces but the music sags and curls up. Any suggestions? Thanks......
