  1. Thanks Ron for the photos. I really like the little guys outfit. My favorite movie cartoon characters! It takes people like Ron and his friend Larry Dunn to make these events happen. Ron sent photos of them loading the truck and kept me informed of the efforts needed to make this happen. Lots more work than simply donating a couple of guitars. As I told Ron in our conversations, it is an honor to be a part of what he and Larry do each year.

  2. @rkl312 It's a joy helping you out. And, learning is a real encouragement to your soul. Quote from Steve Krenz tonight in the chat room. He is so right. What is your soul? Your soul is your journey to follow your dreams.

  3. Agree with most of the advice and definitely the comment that store ruined a perfectly good guitar for you. If there was nothing wrong with the frets before the string change, there was nothing wrong with them after the change. The guitar likely needed the bridge raised a hair or maybe a touch more tension on the truss rod. As Ice9 said, going from .09's to .10's should not require much tweaking of the guitar. Going more that one size up or down, the nut slots may need work for the thicker strings. If going to much thinner strings you might have to have a new nut cut for the thinner strings.

  4. Just watched this TedX presentation by Tommy Emmanuel where he talks about his life as a "One Man Band" Its from 2014, but if you have not seen it, well worth a look! Many consider Tommy to be the best guitar player in the world today and I tend to agree.

  6. Two children on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are going to have the opportunity to learn guitar. Let me digress for a moment. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is Shannon County, South Dakota. According to US statistics it is the poorest county in the United State. Just a couple statistics: per capita income is $9,286. 1 in 4 children, yes 1 in 4! , is born with fetal alcohol syndrome. Each year a musician friend of mine, Larry Dunn, puts on a benefit concert, The Toy Drive for Pine Ridge, to get toys donated for Christmas for the kids on the Pine Ridge Reservation. If you want more to read about Larry and his efforts you can do so here. Every year I go with Larry to deliver the toys and what a heart warming experience it is. I'm not sure how the conversation came about. But @PatIam and I were discussing about some of these kids having access to a guitar and learning to play. Actually, what we were discussing is how unlikely it is for that to happen. We all know about Pat's repairing guitars. Immediately Pat said, "Why don't you let me send some guitars along?" And just a few days later guitars showed up up for me to do just that! Here are two children, that if not for Pat, would never have the opportunity to learn. I took for each of these a Hal Leonard "Method Book 1" and TrueFire has a "Learn Guitar 1. First Steps for Beginners". I need to check to see how they are doing! Pat, both these kids said to tell you "Pilamaya"! (Thank you in the Lakota language>) Aroja Thunder Bull: Jace Fire Thunder:

  7. I'm wondering at that comment too... unless you put VERY heavy gauge strings (Like 13's or higher with a heavy .52.on the LOW E.) on a Les Paul which usually has "10's or 11's " (low E 1st string).... The heavier gauge has more string tension and without a neck adjustment could affect the action. The nut slots might be too narrow also.. Sounds like the store really messed up on this one... I wouldn't let them touch anything of mine again if I were you...

  8. I had Carpal surgery on both of my wrist when I was about 26 yrs. old. I have never had any problems with my wrists since then and I will be 75 in April. It has not made me a better guitar player but it has not hurt my feeble attempt of learning to play. Be sure you get the best orthopedic surgeon you can find, and then let them heal completely before easing back into regular activity. Take Care, Jim

  9. I've found it depends on the neck of your guitar and how big the change in guage is. If you're just going up or down one guage you should be fine but if you do need to have anything adjusted, it should be quite obvious straight away with buzzing strings etc.

  10. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of flat keys, I will fear no voicing: my barre and my capo, they comfort me. —Yours truly, upon attempting Blood, Sweat & Tears
