What’s the story behind Hendrix’s “Wind Cries Mary” and  Vaughan’s song “Lenny”?

Not sure about Hendriks, but I think "Lenny" was the nickname for SRV's wife.

Wind Cry's Mary. it was Jimi's girlfriend at the time, they had a fight and she was throwing pots/pans at him,, they split for a few days, and he had written WCM by then.

Also from what I've read, I can tell you that Hendrix's Room Full of Mirrors was based on his mothers place,

she had a room full of mirrors. (basement maybe,, memory is fading)

as for SRV - Lenny was a guitar he saw hanging in the store as they walked by and he 'dreamed' of owning it. Lenora (aka Lenny) got all her friends to chip in and buy it and she gave it to him.

he said he felt touched and as she slept he wrote the song Lenny.

to see a really great version of Lenny the song, look up Live at the El Mocambo  from Toronto in 1982 (his first visit to TO)

needless to say after countless years on the road.. SRV came home to find his wife cheating on him and subsequently broke up. so much for "Lenny #1".

Lenny never the less is a great song.

It looked to me like Hendrixs  wrote “The  Wind Cries Mary” in 1967. SRV recorded Lenny in 1982, named it for his wife Lenora, but it has the same lyrics as “The Wind Cries Mary”.

I also thought it was an instrumental. Then I read where “Lenny” said the song brought tears to her eyes every time she heard it. I didn’t find the instrumental that emotional. I thought she must be talking about a version with lyrics.or she just meant it brought back memories.

When I googled “lyrics for Lenny and SRV the song came up with lyrics.

I also read sites that said Lenny was a SRV cover for The Winds Cries Mary. The Hendrix’s song Little Wings also started to come up,and therefore the confusion.

it's an instrumental.. check any number of searches (after Metro Lyrics) and you'll all find them state.. No Lyrics or Lyrics not available yet.. and the word Instrumental

if there are lyrics.. I'd bet a coffee that someone on the internet added some added them

I just googled and got "Metro Lyrics" web site and its 100% Wind Cry's Mary.. so someone typed that in .. it ain't Lenny.

I just emailed Metro Lyrics that they are in copy write infringement and to take down the fake lyrics

Quote

"Lenny" is the tenth and final track on the first Stevie Ray Vaughan album Texas Flood. The song is in 4/4 time and notated in the key of E flat major (but instruments are tuned down a half-step). It is played very slowly and freely, with Vaughan alternating between jazz-inflected chords and solo runs. The main chord featured in the song is a movable Major 6th chord in which Stevie Ray Vaughan applies moderate vibrato by use of tremolo bar. The solos incorporate both the E major scale, E minor Pentatonic scale, and E Minor Blues scale. The style is influenced by Jimi Hendrix ballads like "Little Wing" and "Angel". The song itself was written and named for his wife at the time, Lenora. Vaughan also named one of his guitars "Lenny", which he used to play this song and also "Riviera Paradise". The song was often played at live shows.
