Someone on here, months ago in a thread about picks over at our old home, turned me on to V-Picks.  I'm not going to give credit to who I think it was because I will probably be wrong about who it was.  But the bottom line is that I never thought I would would like a pick as thick as the "Screamer" and now that is almost all I use.   The only other one I use, mostly for strumming, is the "Tradition Lite".

This is not to say all V-Picks has is thick ones.  That have all thickness, materials and styles of picks.  But very likely their most popular product is the "Screamer".

With that in mind they currently have a sale on their Starter Kit which includes 7 of their picks of varying thickness and style:

  • Small Pointed Lite -1.5mm
  • Tradition Lite – 1.5mm
  • Tradition Ultra Lite – .8mm
  • Medium Round – 2.75mm
  • Medium Pointed – 2.75mm
  • Medium Pointed Ultra Lite – .8mm
  • Screamer – 2.75mm

Normally, this kit is $28.  On the sale it is $19.95.  V-Picks are not cheap.  But if one wants to try them this is a good way to sample them and save a few bucks.

I like their Euro II pick - it is one of my favorite picks. The Tradition UL and Phil Keaggy signature picks are great as well.

I've tried about 6 different V- Picks now and the last two I Purchased were a Target and a Farley...I've decided for now...My favorite is the Farley! I tried the Euro 11 right before these two and thought with the holes in it, it would make it stick to my fingers even better...but I think for me the picks with out holes work better...The farley is 1.5 MM Thick

I have used V-Picks for years. I have a lot of different picks, but I play with V-Picks 99% of the time. They just don't slip. I purchased the acoustic and electric packs which are still going strong.

Which one of these V-Picks would be more suitable for a jazz tone? Thicker, more rounded...

I'm using a Jim Dunlop 1.25 ? mm rounded point triangle shape. (blue) It's nice, but I find it a bit slippery..  (they fall a lot) I dont' like to hold the pick too tightly as it tenses up my wrist...

I think you might like the V-Pick Medium Rounded shown in the Start Kit. This is a thick pick "Medium Round – 2.75mm". I also play with it a lot. This pick isn't for hard strumming on an acoustic, but it is very good for the Jazz style playing. You could also try the Large Rounded used by Carlos Santana.

@NeilES335, I agree with Randy.  You might like the Medium Round.  You might also go to the V Picks Artist Page and see what some of your jazz guys are using.  Purely as an example, Steve Trovato uses the Tradition Lite Saphire Blue.

@matonanjinI like the Tradition Lite Sapphire Blue. The one weakness with standard V-Pick is the transparent color makes the pick virtually disappear when you lay them down on any surface.

I just received an e-mail from V-Picks. Vinni Smith had a heart attack and 5-way bypass. He made a new pick while recovering.

I saw that email with the title "Vinni is still here" but it didn't register and I didn't click on it.  Wow.  Not a quadruple but a quintuple bypass!

btw, I am also really getting to like the Tradition Lite Sapphire Blue.  I was just in a guitar store and bought another one.  (the only thing I bought!).  I am now perhaps playing it more than the Screamer.

@matonanjin I like the Blue. My V-Picks are clear and they disappear if you don't keep an eye on them which is my only complaint. I bought the starter kits years ago and they are still going strong. The Tradition Lite Sapphire Blue doesn't really look Lite to me, is it fairly thick? Does it have a hole in the middle?

@Randy120, it probably isn't "Lite" if you compare it to the most common picks we're used to.  But it is lighter than V-Picks Screamers, etc.  So I guess that is why Vinny calls it "Lite".   And, no, it doesn't have a hole in it.

All I use anymore all the blue or red picks no matter the brand.  The clear ones walk off.

@matonanjin I use the V-Picks thick and thicker mostly, but mine are all clear. I got some free picks at the Taylor Road show and they are pretty good with very little slippage. D'Addario sent me a large sample of heavy picks when I bought some strings, and I must say they are a very nice assortment so it was a pleasant surprise.
