As you mention, I would recommend getting more comfortable with the exercise before adding the metronome. You want to simplify it as much as possible, then you can add layers of difficulty once you get comfortable. Also, 60bpm is the target speed, so it's what you should work up to, not necessarily what you should practice at.

I would suggest to start playing the exercise very slowly, without a metronome. Pay attention to the note's duration if you can, if you can't it's fine, that would be step 2 once you can play the right notes. Once you're comfortable with that you can add the metronome, for me 40bpm has often been a good starting point for doing these exercises. Then you can raise the bpm a bit (2 to 5) and try again.

Great, thank you!  I will try playing without a metronome for a few sessions and then add it in slowly like you mentioned.

  2. Hi Everyone,

I started session 3 over the past week and am struggling with some of the exercises even at 60 bpm.  For the initial stages of getting used to the new notes and patterns, do I need to use a metronome?  I think trying to keep up is hurting me at this point.  Would it be better to practice the exercises, then when I’m able to do them properly, add in the metronome?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

  3. Took me a little while to get the chromatic scale, but I’m able to hit all the basic exercises at 192 BPM well.  Planning to start the intermediate tomorrow.  I figured if I could get to 192 bpm, starting intermediate would be like a warm up and I could work from there.  I’m a little intimidated by keeping time at the higher rates especially when I get to the 16th notes, but as I’ve learned with the chromatic scale, practice/repetition is key.

You can get it for session 3, the first few songs in it only have notes on the first 4 strings. Then all 6 strings, then they add sharps and flats, which are all covered in session 4.

However the first one (Easy Pop Melodies) is the one you want for now; volumes 2 and 3 (More Easy Pop Melodies and Even More Easy Pop Melodies) are more advanced and they have sharps and flats on the very first song.

    Great, thanks for the info!

Session 3, it's coming along nicely! How are you doing?

I hit the “ready to move on” requirements for session 2 last night.  Planning on starting the session 3 exercises tonight.  Skimmed the material and I know I’ll be here a while.

Steve mentioned getting the Easy Pop Melodies series.  Should I get those at session 3 or would session 4 be better?

  6. I finally was able to complete the chromatic scale with no mistakes at 60 bpm (basic).  I’ve noticed with moving up or down a fret/string, I’m ok, but I miss the string pick sometimes.  Just need to keep drilling at 60 bpm or lower until I can consistently hit it.

  7. @grzyman12 Looks like we’re on the same path.  I’m also using LMG with JustinGuitar.  I’ll take a look at the book you mentioned as well, thanks for the recommendation.

Started playing with a metronome and can hit the exercises at 65 bpm and the song notes at 90 bpm, but I’m struggling with the chords at 90 bpm, so I’ll be camping here for a while.

    Have fun learning man!

  8. I had less trouble reading while playing than I thought I would.  I’m sure that will be challenged a lot more as I incorporate the remaining 4 strings.  I’ve been going through the exercises while counting so far.  Planning on incorporating the metronome with my practice tomorrow to have a better feel for where I’m at.

The C and G7 chords are a little tricky.  I feel like my fingers know where they’re supposed to go, but I have to think about it and reposition to make sure I’m not accidentally touching another string.   Hopefully that will come with time as well.

  9. Haha that’s true.  I’ll get there eventually.  I’m consistently hitting everything at 120 bpm except for the chromatic scale which I can barely get 100% correct at 60 bpm.  I’m going to try slowing it to 48 tomorrow to see if that helps at all.  I just need some repetition so my fingers know where they’re supposed to go.

  10. Attempted the exercises tonight.  I was able to keep up to 120 bpm on basic for the 1st and 2nd exercise, but I have some work to do on the back 4 and chromatic scale.  I wonder how long it would take someone to be capable of hitting the 16th notes at 120 bpm.  Seems impossible at this point haha.

  11. @William Nelson Great, thank you for the info!

I do have another question if you have the time.  I watched through the basic video on my lunch break.  In the intro, he mentioned a stretching exercise (1-2-1-3-1-4-1-5-1-4-1-3-1-2-1).  I was wondering how the timing was with that, but noticed he didn’t do that in basic.  Does that come back in intermediate or advanced?

    Thank you in advance.

  12. @DianeB Thank you for the response.  I'm sorry, I should have worded that better.  I got the bundle you mentioned and the Major Scale Master 1&2, Money Chords, and Jazz Chords all came with a PDF, but the Speed and Agility videos did not.  I was just hoping there was a PDF because I like reading, then watching the videos, but if that's not possible, I'll just write everything down during the first pass through.

    Thank you again!

  13. Planning to start session 2 tonight.  I used to play drums in school, so I know the note counts and I’ve learned basic EGBDF/FACE stuff and the way whole steps/half steps work, but I’m pretty nervous about reading a line, recognizing the note and translating that too guitar quickly enough to sound like music haha.  Any tips on reading music quickly and making sure you’re not just memorizing through repetition?

  14. Hi Everyone,

Just got the course today and finished session 1.  I have played some in the past and know most of my open chords, so most of the lesson wasn’t new information, but I want to make sure I have a strong foundation so I can truly progress.  I technically have already hit the “you can move on when...” requirements, but do you think I should spend a week or so just to really drill in the finger exercises or just move on the session 2?  I don’t want to do a disservice to myself even though I’ve technically met the requirements.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

  15. I started guitar years ago off and on and never got far beyond simple open chords.  I’ve always wanted to really learn and I remember seeing this course years ago and just decided to get it. I’m looking forward to learning, but the usual doubt of “can I really do this?” is already creeping in haha.  I’m looking forward to the practice and trusting the process and we’ll see where I am a year or more from now.
