  1. Anyone can play the guitar. Play the 5th string open, then the fourth string open, then the open 5th string again followed by the open 6th string open. WOW! you just played a I IV V progression. Congratulations, in about 60 seconds you just learned to play the guitar. Now I know why they say anyone can play the guitar. 😁That’s about how the Great Courses start their guitar course. It’s about an 8 hour course of instruction with about 4 hours of story telling. It’s on sale now for $35 dollars. I watched the entire course and it’s not bad. Wirth a lot more than than sale price, but perhaps not worth the regular price of $ 269.95 dollars. It is presented different than the learn and master course.A lot of fingerstyle playing.I found it informative and enjoyable to watch. I’ve been wanting to change the way I hold the guitar, but I thought after all these years it would be difficult to change. Following along this course for 8 hours I managed to switch to a classical guitar position and now it feels a lot better to play. Assuming you have Amazon Prime Video you can watch the course free, providing you do it with-in the 7 day free trial period given by the Great Courses Signature Channel. Now that I can play the guitar I guess I’ll watch another one of their courses “Death, Dying and the Afterlife”. Perhaps it will answer that age old question. Can I take my guitars with me or will the “ Grim Reaper” with its mighty scythe, just mow them down, like blades of grass? Since, it’s assumed that psychopomps have only one task, guiding the soul to the afterlife with no guitars...😇
  2. Thanks, I just bought another one of those fake books and this time I read the copyright information. It got me thinking about Cover Bands, juke boxes, karaoke, street performers, school sponsored bands and teachers, especially those on the internet.
  3. I have a couple of hypothetical question! 1. Can Steve teach a song on his live lessons as long as he keeps the lesson plan to less than 10 percent of the song? 2. What does it cost a music teacher to use copyrighted material for educational purposes on line or in a classroom?
  4. A few years ago I bought the Hal Leonard Real Book. It has some interesting songs and the melodies are fairly simple. At the time I knew they were called Jazz Standards and that was confusing. I thought Jazz was supposed to be difficult and here were about two hundred Jazz Standards that were pretty easy to play. It wasn’t until I played around in session 18 did I get a better idea of what one did with these beginner melodies. Now, I realize that these “Real Book Songs” along with the exercise “Swing’n” in session 18 are actually called lead sheets. I will never look at Autumn Leaves the same again, especially now that I have been looking at a 13 page arrangement based on that 1 page lead sheet. I just got “The Real blues Book” and just browsing through it for a few minutes I already have a dozen questions, but at least I know I am looking at Lead Sheets.
  5. Does anyone have a sagework support system for their classical guitar? Is it as easy to install the magnets as some youtube sites show?
  6. I enjoyed listening to these student play. I always thought playing Classical guitar would be great, but I was scared away by the nut width of a classical guitar. The way they hold the guitar, with the neck up, always made sense. I noticed early on that holding the neck up made your “fingers longer”. One thing I read once by a classical teacher, in regards to barre chords was that you only use the part of the index finger up from the first knuckle, which also made sense, that seems to be the straightest part of the finger. at least for me, but required a “long” finger. I did eventually buy a classical hybrid guitar that is clearly my favorite. Too bad these kids (or parents)need to borrow or shell out close to $200.000 for their education.
  7. I have purchased sheet music from this site and have had no complaints. Recently when I had a question about some sheet music I thought I would contact them using their support page on their web site. I real didn’t expect a response, but to my surprise within 24 hours I got a reply to my question and a phone number to contact the support person answering the question to talk further, if need be.
  8. Strange you should bring this up. Just the other day I was going through my music books and reading comments I made. I was surprised that on viewing the notes I wrote years ago most were incorrect.
  9. My conclusion about it pertaining to the chorus section was wrong. It’s a classical notation for the type of barre chord to use. I had thought that the C might indicated a capo, but since this C was at the 7 measure I disregarded it meaning a capo. I had also thought about C for Chico, but since it didn’t involve the use of my pinky finger I discarded that meaning. I have a few classical books and none mentioned this C1. This morning I took my amp to this out of the way music store to be fixed. There were books and sheet music laying all around on the floor. It looked like “tornado” hit the place. One classical book caught my eye, classical guitar by Charles Duncan. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened the book it was book three and the first page started on barre chords and there was C1. My other classical books use B, French for barre and not C Italian for capotasto. They also used Roman numerals like B IV meaning barre 4th fret. C1 full barre, first fret.
  10. I was wrong about it having anything to do with the chorus section. I looked at numerous versions of the song and placing any chorus section at that point makes no sense. It’s a classical notation telling you to use a full barre chord 1st fret.
  11. I have seen C1 used for that purpose, but only at piano sites. When I looked at numerous pages of piano sheet music I still only found symbols like 8 vb, 8 va 15 ma and 15mb. So, I am not sure if the piano octaves C0 C2 C3 etc.ever actually show up on piano sheet music. I figured out my C1 and it’s a classical guitar notation meaning a full barre chord 1st Fret. The line I mentioned indicates all the notes below the line can be played while holding that barre chord. C as in “capotasto”or C as in “ cejillo”
  12. I used this amp 8 or 9 months ago and it was working fine. I put it in the closet when I was done. Today I plugged it in and nothing. What would go wrong by just storing the amp? I guess I should have covered it to prevent dust from getting into it. One site said to clean the potentiometers and another said they are hard to get too. Any suggestions.
  13. I’ve come to the conclusion that the C.1 is a reference to the chorus section.
  14. Thanks, It’s the Fadd9 the song is using. Immediately below the F In the rhythm is a C.1.Any thoughts on the meaning of C.1 I used the term double voicing and that term may not be correct. In the Song Hits song Satin Doll, Steve uses the same music notation in the intro of that song. Its that fingerstyle style notation that I am referring too. It has nothing to do with the C.1 I probably couldn’t have made my first post more confusing.
  15. I was playing around with a song I down loaded from Musicnotes. A fingerstyle version of Red River Valley that’s not too difficult. It’s in the key of C with a I IV V progression. When it gets to the IV chord directly below the F there is a C .1 and a line going across the Top of the measure. The only notes in the measure start with the open F chord (or Fmaj9) then the single notes F A. The arrangement also has tablature below and it matches the chord and notes. The music is written with a double voicing and the first voicing for this measure would be the notes G F A. The G being part of the Fmaj9 chord. I’ ve never seen this voicing for Fmaj9 before. ”Oh how lonely and how dreary it will be” if I don’t get a response.” I guess I never knew the lyrics to this 1800 era song that has gone by many names, for example “ In the Bright Mohawk Valley”
  16. Any thoughts on Bleedlove’s bridge truss system. Bleedlove claims it increases vibration of the top and provides remarkable sustain. They claim it allows them to use thinner wood tops, thus allowing the top wood to produce its best sound. i see that last year they stopped using it, unless you request it in a custom guitar.
  17. Thanks , I was also under the impression guitar tops were perfectly flat. So I was assuming any hump behind the bridge was caused by string tension on the bridge. I guess the correct term is bridge belly and not “hump”.
  18. Modal Interchange, modes and parallel keys were a few of the confusing terms I first came across. I now have a little better understanding about borrowing chords ( modal Interchange) from other keys at first it seemed pretty straight forward until I realized that modes were also parallel keys.Take a common I bVII IV {D. C2 G) chord progression in the key of D. Where is the C2 coming from, the Major Key of C, G or D minor? What notes will make the best solo over that C2. Now I realize that D mixolydian is probably a better choice, because of the intervals in that mode. So, now I am beginning to see why the Mixolydian mode keeps coming up as a mode to learn.
  19. Recently I bought the sheet music for “Blue eyes crying in the Rain”. They usually only show you the first page when buying sheet music on line, so I was disappointed when I printed it and the solo wasn’t included. These sheet music sites should mention that the solo is not included with the music. Luckily this is a popular song and the solo was easy to find on YouTube. It appears to be a Solo using all the notes in the E blues scale.Great solo, my favorite part of the song.
  20. I guess that’s one way to look at it. I just start on the parallel mode.E minor to E Dorian or A minor to A Dorian etc or E minor to E Mixolydian etc.
  21. Every once in awhile someone asks about modes. Last night while reading I came across this statement. “When you have a minor progression that has a major or dominant IV chord you’ll want to use the Dorian mode to solo over it. This is one of the most common uses of the Dorian Mode”.Also, it said that Carlos Santana was the master of using this mode. So, I guess I will be looking for some Santana music to see what he does.
  22. I recently bought an 8 year old guitar. They had some photos and said it looked great, which is what I would expect someone to say. Boy, was I surprised, sounds great looks brand new.
  23. What’s interesting to me is that the music was written for acoustic guitar and you would think the common “vibrato” symbol would have been better. Oh well, Potayto, potahto
  24. Thanks, that never entered my mind. I guess I really didn’t understand what the term tremolo really meant. The tremolo bar on electric guitars is obviously misnamed.
