  1. I was under the impression Boveda owns the rights and manufactures the packets that get marketed.  I’m trying the Humidipak system in one acoustic this season and using their Humiditrak BT to monitor that guitar vs one with Dampit /Music nomad sponges.  Sweetwater had D’Addario starter packs cheaper than Boveda, so we’ll see.   Are packets interchangeable in either pouch system?

The most compelling reason to try was their claim of reducing humidity during warmer months when our A/C wasn’t needed.  I found internal RH% over 65 in a case and was cautioned such levels over long periods could lead to bracing failure.

  2. David Hamburger posted this story in a recent newsletter and I laughed at the connotations:

Before I get to the playlist, I'll pass on a story my friend Ed Russell posted earlier in the week about Pat Martino. Ed's one of the first musicians I met when I moved to New York City, and I heard plenty of his Pat Martino stories when we were hanging out and playing music together, but I'd never heard this one until a few days ago. One day in 1976 Ed went to Philadelphia for his first lesson with Pat. Making his way through the neighborhood, getting directions from assorted old Italian gentlemen assuring him he was indeed heading towards the home of "the world's greatest guitarist," he was finally approaching casa di Martino when the door opened and Pat's previous student walked out – none other than Captain Trips himself. "What's happening?" Ed asked. Without skipping a beat, Jerry Garcia replied "Pat Martino!" and sauntered off.

  3. @Wim VD1 I just rejoined his F5 as well.  I had taken a few months off over the summer, hope to follow your progress in their forum.  The improvisation and arranging aspects really challenge my talent level, but I have a feeling you’ll be up for the challenge in no time.  If you have any technical difficulties, look up Ricky Ramirez in the forum.  He’s an original member, seems genuine, and will point you toward most anything.
I can’t disagree with your assessment of Bob Minner being sweet; but we give it a listen while we prepare dinner and unwind from the day.

  4. @Wim VD1. I like it.  Your skills are definitely growing.  Your bass lines and rhythm are on an upswing.  My only criticism would be of the sensual nature…Ulysses and the siren’s call is still missing.  To me, that’s the real deal.
But all that aside, that’s one fine piece!

By sensual, I’m thinking heart and soul…

Perhaps Bob Minner’s Solo album epitomizes what I’m trying to convey

Your fingerstyle playing is some of your best efforts!

  5. I’m a fan of Rodrigo y Gabriela when it comes to tapping.  Watching her live is a treat.  Their early version of Stairway to Heaven was a unique experience.
Christie Lenee is a talented, and turbocharged ball of energy as well.
Tapping is a tool, that used properly, can be a positive addition to an artist’s repertoire…if overused, like many pedals, can get old fast.  IMHO 🤓

    William,

I get the nails’ dilemma.   I’m an avid gardener and longer nails can be a real pain, so I’m constantly balancing their length.
I enjoy your musical posts, so keep them coming.  D Hamburger is one of my favorite TF instructors.
    Best,

  7. @Wim VD1  I like what you've done with this song.  I can hear an improved groove and 'thump' in the baseline.  If my foot counts, it wanted to move while I played this for my wife.  She agrees with my assessment as well.  Keep going, the work effort is definitely paying off.  Well done!  My only criticism would be to elevate your attack to get more volume and showcase your confidence.

  8. @matonanjin Your promise:  Oh, and I did mention the guitar stores, didn't I?  Well I did hit Gruhn's and Carter's Vintage and Rumble Seat!  And, yes, there will be a NGD post coming in the next day of two.  I just have to get a photo.  It's probably not going to be what most of you expect.

It appears to me that you have insider connections for NGD(s) this year...can I include a wish list of my own for special delivery?  My normally brown eyes are definitely taking on a greenish hue!

  9. Doug,

The best straight-up advice I've received when using a metronome is to NOT CHASE THE CLICKS.  It is a tool to MEASURE time...not much else.  Jason Isbell's lyric in Last of My Kind cites 'everyone else claps on the 1 and the 3' makes me appreciate the backbeat (often snare) falling on the 2 and the 4.  :-0

As for live, a recent story surrounding the passing of Charlie Watts, recalled Keith Richards intentionally altering the beat during a song, only to be amazed how quickly Charlie got the beat back under control.  Richards always claimed he had worked with one of the best, in Charlie, when it came to keeping everyone on the beat and it made his life on stage so much easier.  IMHO,  if everyone is not synced on the beat, an overall 'disjointed feeling' is generated, whether it is live or recorded, and the listener is left feeling uncomfortable.

  10. @Wim VD1  D. Hamburger and Eric Skye have posted You Tube presentations, in the past, focusing on using a metronome focusing on the 2 & 4 to maximize groove.  E. Skye's was in a 30 Day Challenge format (very casual and chock full of great ideas each day) and D. Hamburger was in a Fretboard Confidential presentation.  Both sources are free.

  11. @matonanjin Sad news indeed.  I had recently watched an interview clip of him back in the 90's and he really came off as a polar opposite to Mick and Keith's 'oversized, outlandish' persona!  He ranked only behind those two in time spent as a member of the Stones.  He was always in the background keeping everyone on the beat...even when Richards intentionally changed it during a song to mess with him, and Charlie quickly got it back.  R.I.P. Mr Watts.
