Is MikeM's yahoo group still active?   I just checked it out and tried to send a "join request" but for some reason the request failed to send..

    The error message as follows:

Sorry, an error occurred while loading the content.

I don't know if there were any other authorized admins on that... no one has updated that site in quite some time, and since Mike M has passed ?, I'm not sure if anyone can. Haven't looked at those files in quite some time myself.

I am about 90% of the way to meeting and/or exceeding the standards in "you're ready to move on" and I play along decently well with Steve, but if I try to apply the same standards (60 bpm for exercises or 90 bpm for songs) to the bonus resource book, it feels like I more like 70% there, maybe 50% on the ties/dots/rest exercises in the bonus book.

I will definitely keep working on these and I'm not in a hurry to move on, but I was wondering if the bonus book was supposed to be more difficult and its okay to move on when you meet the "You're ready to move on" even if your not as sharp on the bonus book.

Sounds like you are right on track! :)

Steve did mention a time or two that this session really could have been two separate sessions: one for the notes on string 5&6, and the other dealing with sharps, flats, ties, dots, rests, etc.

Session 4 is definitely one of the more challenging sessions. Take it slow and steady especially with the ties, dots and rests as the rhythms can get tricky. Set your metronome super slow and gradually move it up.

Keep at it! You will get it! If there is one or two exercises that are hanging you up, then don't worry, move on, and keep working those as a warm up. You'll know when it is the right time to move on.  The bonus session is definitely a bit more challenging, but give it a bit more time and you will see results! :)

  3. I think some 'helpful tips' videos would be great!

Even though I have been here since the beta testing, there are things I am sure I've forgotten, lol! (I still have issues trying to embed links in posts and such... things I don't do often) :)

And some basic tutorials may help folks get comfortable using the forum. We have quite a variety of skill level both on guitar and in the IT sense as well!

    Good idea Doug! :)

  4. I have used the Octave method (as mentioned above), as well as taking one note at a time, and locating it all over the guitar. String by string, then jumping around. If you are doing pentatonic scales, saying the notes as you play them helps greatly too.

One additional thing I did, to really solidify some of the notes, was to go back to the early sessions of L& M (if you are using it, if not just go back to very basic songs...) and I played them in the fifth position (as much as possible). You'd be surprised how difficult some of those songs can be in fifth position if you have only played them in first, lol! That really helped me get most of the notes solidly in my memory from frets 5-8. Then from 8-12 I could deduce what the notes were by referring to the 12th fret.

  5. I have a Kala U-bass, a baritone uke, and a cute pink uke (mostly for decoration, lol).

The Kala U-bass does give an amazing sound. I used it in the past to play bass with a mountain dulcimer group when they asked me to play bass.  Folks were looking around to see where the bass was - it sounded a lot like an upright with the little amp I used. The small scale and no actual frets took me a bit to get used to though (I learned on a full scale 4 string electric bass).

I picked up a baritone ukulele just to play around with, because the chords were similar to guitar chords since the tuning is DGBE. Quite fun to play around with, and I have found some tab and song sheets to play from.

  6. I've been working on the main Learn and Master course for quite a few years, probably 10 or so. I'm up to session 14 or so, but have dabbled with other courses along the way. Moved a few times (long distance) and that seemed to really derail my practice. Also got sidetracked a bit with other instruments, so my practice time got spread thin sometimes. Hoping to start the Fingerstyle course soon, but thinking I might want to just concentrate on the main course and get further along in it. One thing I know, is I am so grateful I found Steve's course all those years ago!

  7. I am really enjoying your material already. The Learn and Master Course and Bonus, the Song Hits, and Fingerstyle.

I'm almost finished with the Major scales workouts.

One thing I do miss is the Power workouts that used to be on the Gibson site.

I found the open chord and barre chord ones especially helpful. I miss those! They were fun!
