My thoughts go to one of the auto detailing compounds in a medium grit, finished with a fine grit to remove the finish. Either way, I get squeamish at the prospect of doing it on one of my acoustics...but again, I will never play a guitar as he does. ?
@Plantsman13 - he does it to enhance the scratching and percussive stuff that are part of many of his tunes.

At a Maton presentation several of us attended last year during NAMM week, Tommy told us he uses a screwdriver to scrape the finish off the lower bout when he gets a new guitar. ?

Pete Huttlinger was not only a great guitar player, he was also a great instructor. His instructional DVDs are all excellent. I noticed this evening that Homespun has one of his DVDs on sale for $12. It includes a number of songs that appear on Pete's albums including one of my favorites, Darcy's Guitar. I think the sale ends today (7/26).

Many start with 'Freight Train' - you can find lots of how-to videos on Youtube.
Once you begin to feel comfortable with a thumb pick, check out some of Pete Huttlinger's DVDs. He was an awesome instructor.
