I couple of weeks into session 4.

I'm doing it in chunks like it was recommended by others. It's easier that way imo. I went into using metronomy for exercises couple of days ago and it's going smoothly. I have a  feeling I will start doing sharps and flats in cuple of days and that it will be smooth sailing to session 5 from here.

Another update will be posted before finishing .

    Peace

It's nice to see you're making steady progress, keep it up and let us know!

I'm following the learn and master guitar course by steve krenz. I was wondering whether to use 4 beats  1 division or 4 beats 2 division (where metronome has 2 ticks for 1 beat)metronome for 8th note exercises. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thank you.

Sorry for the late response, I just saw your post now.

You should set the metronome to the beat, so in those exercises in 4/4 time it would be 4 beats per bar. It's also what it means when when you see a specific tempo for a piece.

The same goes for foot tapping or strumming; your foot/hand will go down on the beat and up on the "and"s.

Great topic and great video but I have NO idea why you are hung up on tube amps. I use two widely-available Fender amps, the Mustang LT-25 and the Mustang GTX 50 for practice at home.  The LT-25 is extremely small, single 8" and has full modeling capabilities that will give you any tube amp sound you want. The GTX 50 is even more versatile and has about twice the capabilities and a 12" speaker. Both have full Fender Tone (cloud app available from Fender) capabilities, both include great built-in tuners, USB, editable effects and the larger unit includes a looper if you get the footswitch.

I'm old and I just love tubes, but the sound out of these two amplifiers, the light weight, and compact size all won me over. The GTX 50 can definitely be used for live performance as well unless you are into loud heavy metal. The LT-25 makes a great little jazz amp, and will fit nicely into a small carry-on suitcase for air travel, as I did before the damn pandemic ruined everything.

I'm surprised that digital amps didn't come up, especially for someone with such back problems.

If you want the sound, look, feel and features of the original Fender amps, then the Tone Master series do exactly that with a fraction of the weight.

Moving on to Session 2.  Still not happy with fingering dexterity and the left pinky seems to have a mind of its own .. but time to move forward.  Those things will come as I practice more on session 2.  Really like this course .. tried different "books" over the years, but I need direction  🙂

Your dexterity will improve as you practice other things, and you can (and should) go over these exercises quickly as a warm up.

So on disc one lesson one .. but going to stay here for a while .. arthritis in the hands makes the fingering exercises challenging .. but getting better every day .. spend a minimum of 20 mins a day. Really want to get all 4 fingers moving. 🙂

Thanks for the update! Everyone says to take your time and enjoy the journey, so you must be doing it right!

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for all your encouraging contributions. I am now on session 3 but I think my progress is rather too slow. I've been on it for almost a month now, still struggling with the bonus exercises at 60bpm. Though I'm getting better at it, I just feel my progress slow compared to all these comments I've reading here about persons spending just few weeks.

You shouldn't compare yourself with others; everyone is different and you don't know how long people practice.

If you struggle with the bonus exercises at 60bpm, at what speed do you not struggle? What about the standard exercises? And what do you struggle with exactly?

When starting the learn and master guitar course do you try and learn the session workshop and the bonus workshop on the same day or is that too much . Thanks John

I'm on session 4, and I find that working on both workshops together is beneficial. They are usually more exercises on the same concepts, and working on one helps me with the other. For example, the songs at the end of the regular workshops are harder than the first exercises of the bonus workshops, so these help me with the songs.

It might be different for future sessions however, we shall see.

    Hi Everyone,

I started session 3 over the past week and am struggling with some of the exercises even at 60 bpm.  For the initial stages of getting used to the new notes and patterns, do I need to use a metronome?  I think trying to keep up is hurting me at this point.  Would it be better to practice the exercises, then when I’m able to do them properly, add in the metronome?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

As you mention, I would recommend getting more comfortable with the exercise before adding the metronome. You want to simplify it as much as possible, then you can add layers of difficulty once you get comfortable. Also, 60bpm is the target speed, so it's what you should work up to, not necessarily what you should practice at.

I would suggest to start playing the exercise very slowly, without a metronome. Pay attention to the note's duration if you can, if you can't it's fine, that would be step 2 once you can play the right notes. Once you're comfortable with that you can add the metronome, for me 40bpm has often been a good starting point for doing these exercises. Then you can raise the bpm a bit (2 to 5) and try again.

  9. Welcome back @MrStig91! There are a few of us in the first sessions right now. I agree with Neil, you should start at the beginning and work your way back up. This way you can make sure that you didn't forget anything, and you gradually get those tiny muscles back in the game.

Aim for a minimum of 15 minutes a day, and keep us posted of your progress!

    Also welcome @grzyman12!

I hit the “ready to move on” requirements for session 2 last night.  Planning on starting the session 3 exercises tonight.  Skimmed the material and I know I’ll be here a while.

Steve mentioned getting the Easy Pop Melodies series.  Should I get those at session 3 or would session 4 be better?

You can get it for session 3, the first few songs in it only have notes on the first 4 strings. Then all 6 strings, then they add sharps and flats, which are all covered in session 4.

However the first one (Easy Pop Melodies) is the one you want for now; volumes 2 and 3 (More Easy Pop Melodies and Even More Easy Pop Melodies) are more advanced and they have sharps and flats on the very first song.

I started guitar years ago off and on and never got far beyond simple open chords.  I’ve always wanted to really learn and I remember seeing this course years ago and just decided to get it. I’m looking forward to learning, but the usual doubt of “can I really do this?” is already creeping in haha.  I’m looking forward to the practice and trusting the process and we’ll see where I am a year or more from now.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Well, I'll necro this thread, as I'm about to give it another try.

I bought the boxed set just as Gibson moved in, got a nice discount on the pre Gibson branded box, and tried to learn on a cheap acoustic my then wife bought me, that practically killed my fingers. Hadn't thought about setting up a guitar at that point.

I believe I was playing around at session 4 when I got a promotion at work and started to travel a lot and free time became scarce. The guitar and the course sat gathering dust as life took me through some tangled paths.

Recently I grabbed and dusted off that guitar after another failed relationship and dug out the course. The guitar is still terrible.

After doing some 'serious' research I just popped it on top of my wardrobe and agreed to buy a Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plustop Pro from a guy up the road tomorrow, who has almost never used it, and a tiny old Gorilla practice amp he has, same exact amp as I had when I was a kid (thankfully no flying V this time :D ).

Looking forward to reacquainting myself with Steve and his excellent course, I recall getting to the point I felt I was able to read music last time, this time I want to finish the course and feel comfortable playing.

How's it coming along JohnnyH? I also decided to get back to it. I started on January 1st and I will start session 3 today.
