Thanks, I am not sure I understand how using a capo was relevant to the pentatonic scales.

I recently changed my saddle.It was tusq and now it’s cow bone.The Guitar sounded better with the tusq saddle. I was assuming the bone saddle would just last longer and nothing more. Next time I change strings the bone will also go.

I was reading about the Elizabeth Cotten’s song Freight Train.She stated that she wrote it, between 1906- 1912. During the 1950’s two guys claimed the song as theirs and copyrighted it and made a small fortune. Their names still appears on some sheet music with hers, even though she did eventually get the copyright. Since she didn’t publish the song when she wrote it, I am assuming her copyright was for 95 years from a publishing date between 1924 and 1987 or 70 years from her death in 1987. Kinda confusing. Since so many teachers say, it should be the first fingerstyle song you should learn, I was curious why Steve didn’t use it in session 10, now I think I understand.

I don’t know about you, but I now realize that I spent too much time trying to fret the bar chords and no time on the actual chord tones I was playing, except the root note. Not to mention the major scales I was dancing around while fretting the barre chord positions. Barre chords take so much time to learn, its a shame not to learn all those chord tones at the same time.

The Nut is often over looked, if you have been working on barre chords awhile and still having problems make sure the nut isn’t the problem. All it takes is for the E or B strings at the nut to be set wrong to cause you misery. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HRktOyDTn10

I see that Greg holds down or capos the first fret before measuring the string height at the 12 fret. Some techs don’t hold down the first fret when they measure and some measure at the end of the fret board, not the 12 fret. One would think that there would be a standardized procedure on setting the action.

I met an old college friend the other day and he is now making custom guitars. He was getting ready to start a new one and we started to talk about wood types.Then he took me outside and showed me tree trunk about 3 ft tall and with a diameter of about 24 inches and that’s where he starts. I always assumed that small shop luthiers started with wood already cut to workable dimensions. He could see a spruce guitar top, all I could see was firewood. update, I stopped by the luthiers house this morning, I was curious how he managed to cut the spruce log. He had it all cut. He told me he started with a chain saw then commercial band saw, 10 joiner, 20 inch planer, and then a wide belt sander. Then he painted the ends and stacked the wood to dry. So, if you have a chain saw and the other wood working tools you can start with a log. What really surprised me was that he never took a class, he just learned by trail and error.He was a highly skilled cabinetmaker. It was a blue spruce not Sitka.

I am assuming that the medium shuffle is referring to the chord progression pattern. Or is he referring to the rhythm in the song performance, that to my ear doesn’t sound like the strum pattern shown.

The live lesson with Robben Ford was pretty informative. At my level I don’t come across many diminished chords. One of my lessons did have a Db dim 7. Now I have a better understanding of diminished chord arpeggios and how they are layed out on the fret board and the “whole-half” diminished scale. A diminished scale A B C D Eb F Gb Ab

I was watching the Robben Ford lesson and he mentioned his amp; A 1983 Dumble. Reverb has a used 1984 for only $98,000. I was going to buy it, but then I noticed it said local pick-up only.Well, that adds $66.00 for gas to the price, putting it out of my price range.

Want a nice mellow sounding guitar? Try one with a western cedar top, especially if you play fingerstyle.

What’s the difference? Does cross-picking mean they don’t always pick chord tones?

Have you ever seen a song that uses the F5 power chord with a fingering that frets the first fret F C F and third fret CF with a muted G string?

Hi, My goal in session 5 was to make sure I could finger the chords.I knew it would take a lot of practice to make the changes.The G7, G and the C chords posed a problem for me but, I moved on before I could play them and continued to work on them. When I started this course I wanted to play the stuff BB king played and I remember him saying he didn’t do chords.(He obviously didn’t count triads)That was very encouraging, but the fact is chords are everywhere The G7 and G barre chords are easier than the open chord versions. I was also relieved to learn chords like G/C, G/B and G/A and other fingering for G7. Even the 4 finger G chord turned out to be easier than the 3 finger version. Cadd9 and C major7 were also nice to know. The one song that helped me with the E and B7 chords was the song Folsom Prison Blues.

Well, if you grew up where Ice cream trucks roomed the neighborhoods you probably have the tune tucked away in your childhood memory.That was one of the tunes those trucks blasted out to call the kids.Another one was the “Entertainer”.

Steve, I came across this song on line. When I read the story behind the song it said it was written in the key of A, but the key center was B mixolydian. When I looked at some on- line sheet music,for the song, in the key of A, nothing seemed to explain why the key center was B mixolydian. Finally, I found the song in a Beatle’s song book. I realized all the original chords were in fact from the B mixolydian mode. The on-line sheet music was a different version of the song, even though it was in the key of A the chords weren’t the same as the original.

I didn’t know that Martin’s term Dreadnought was take from the British warship HMS Dreadnought. I tried a Martin D-28 today and even though the measurements between body styles isn’t very much I could tell it wasn’t a “triple o” body. I guess one would get used to it, but I prefer the smaller body.

Anyone have the Looper Pedal songbook? I see it has 50 song hits arranged for guitar. $11.55 on Amazon.
