E to E/D# if I pick this chord slow I can  hear the D#, but when I strum it the two chords sound the same. Do I just have poor hearing? Can you hear the difference?

I was looking through some old acoustic guitar magazines and came across this song. I am a little confused because it has Joan  placing a capo on the first fret and then the music tab has her playing notes on the first fret.

It actually looks like a good beginner fingerstyle song.

 

[Impossible chords]

Thanks, but my thumb is too short. Using my middle finger on the 3rd string almost works and if I was 50 years younger it probably would work. What does seem to work is a rootless B7b9, assuming it’s the flatted 9th in the voicing that’s seems to be important. I guess I could just play it at the 5th or 8th position.

How many of you have the B7b9 (7 position) listed as one of the many impossible chords? Just curious, how does someone with large hands get around this chord used in “Autumn Leaves”. I am thinking  that maybe B7 is the solution since it follows F#m7b5.

Tuninghead, session ten is a good test for your barre chords.Its not that difficult  if you give it some time and will help with your coordination.Hal Leonard has a pretty good “Fingerstyle“and “Classical book” that can make the session more interesting.”Classical for Guitar” by Jerry Snyder is also pretty good along with “Contemporary Travis Picking”.

[Songs to learn]

I haven’t seen a list like the song hits,but the jam along cd has some songs that go withe sessions. Songs like Bluey,The Cats Meow and Fatboy. Outside of those I think a good one to start with would be the “St. Louis Blues“ by WC Handy.You might also look at “On A Monday” by led Belly. Another resource you might look at is the book “Blues Rhythms You can Use” by John Ganapes.Another resource many of us are using Is the Griff Hamlin “Blues Guitar Unleashed””Plus Hal Leonard has a “12 bar Blues” by Dave. Rubin.

You might consider the book  “Blues you can Use” The first two song  in it are “Texas Rock”and “Blues Rock Tune”. These two songs will make session 1 more enjoyable. The songs use simple pentatonic notes  and the second song uses a 7 fret full bend. Using an acoustic you might change  these full “choke bends” Into a “blues curl.”
