  1. I was looking at Eric Clapton’s version of “Malted Milk” by Robert Johnson and the notation had a series of bends and releases marked  “even release”. I haven’t come across that term before.I guess it said “even release” because there were 3 half bends in secession and I am assuming it just means you just keep tension on the string and pull down evenly for each bend.

  2. “There is a girl in New York City that calls herself the human trampoline .“ Paul said that line came to him as he walked passed a museum. Sticking to that story should subject him to a mandatory hypnosis session. Just kidding. I will go along with that story unless I later learn that the museum was on 7th avenue. Yes, I know he is a talented song writer and what about the line  “she wore diamonds on the soles of her shoes”? Yea, thats a good one  but, doesn’t it just mean she had “Money to burn”? Simon’s  songs, if my memory serves me usually made sense. Occasionally you may need a dictionary, but more often than not, it  just substantiates he has a pretty good vocabulary.

  3. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this earlier Now I start with the melody as usual  and go measure by measure and just try  to make simple changes to the each measure. Then the second time through I see where I can changes to  positions on the neck and try  to add vibrato. The third time through  I play with adding Dyads. The fourth time I concentrate on adding triads and chords. It just makes more  sense to start with simple things and not get bogged down with all the choices. Steve probably mentioned all of this in the course  years ago, it just wasn’t relevant at the time so it didn’t get a place mark in my brain.

  4. Eric Clapton’s  song “ Signe” looks like a great beginner fingerstyle song. Well, maybe not an absolute beginner but the song is amazingly simple. The difficulty seems to be the timing so, a metronome is probably a good idea. It’s moderately slow at 88 bbm but, it’s in cut time so the the foot taps on Beats 1 and 3.The version I am using is in Clapton’s book “Clapton Unplugged”. It’s 8 pages and is played  on a nylon string guitar.

  5. Alternative rock genre. One song that was in this genre was “Smells Like Teen Spirit” I personally don’t think I missed anything by not listening to this genre. I always thought this was the worst song title I’d ever heard and the song lyrics are just as bad. But, I am obviously the odd guy out. The song seemed to be a real crowd pleaser.

One thing I did learn from Paul Simon was that he gave a song a title as a placeholder until it decided on a better name.In fact the song name “Graceland” was  a name he didn’t intend on keeping. Maybe that’s what Nirvana was thinking when it used the name of a body deodorant for their hit song.

  6. I recently stumbled across a song by a Jamaican song writer Vincent Ford. A song made famous by Bob Marley “No Women No Cry.” (women don’t cry) Someone  in session 5 might enjoy playing this song. I would suggest the version in the book “100 greatest songs of rock and roll”.

I didn’t know much about Marley or how he died. The song gives a few hints,When he was a teenager he lived in “government yard” a public housing project. In a neighborhood called Trench Town. I believe it was an old slave plantation named after its master.

He belonged to a cult “Rastafarianism” and one of its sacraments was to smoke the “wisdom weed” since it was one of the herbs God gave man.The cult also could have contributed to his death. He died from a melanoma (ALM) that appeared as a dark spot under his big toe nail. Because of his beliefs he refused to have the toe amputated. It was a metastatic cancer and spread to his brain,  in 1981 he passed. Caught early it might have been treated, but it was a rare form of cancer and the dark spot probably didn’t appear serious to him early on.

He was buried with his guitar in Nine Mile Jamaica.

  7. It looks like at least  30 bands that were looking for a name started or ended up by going through Bob Dylan’s songs. Bands like “Baby Blue”, “Blood on the Tracks” and “Cream.”

One name that got my curiosity that didn’t come from Dylan was “Blue Oyster Cult”. Seemed a bit  odd to name your band after a bivalve molluscs. Well, it turned out It’s not a mollusks after all but a blue oyster mushroom. Seems there manager was also a poet and one of his poems was about aliens and blue oyster cult was in one of his poem. His poems don’t appear to have been published so, I ran into a dead end trying to find the poem. The bands first of many names was  “Soft White underbelly” then  they changed it again to “Santos Sister.”  Blue oyster Cult was to be America’s answer to Black Sabbath “ which  by the way was named after a low budget horror film.

  8. A 1966 documentary about Bob Dylan’s 1966 European tour. Gordon Quinn helped Dylan with the documentary. I guess that was the reason Gordon’s  name  made it into a Dylan Song. Any guesses which one? Think indigenous peoples.

  9. Funny how you look at a name and your brain plays tricks on you. I would have bet that the heavy metal  bands name came from Maccabees. Probably,  because I recently had learned that Pete Seeger’s Turn,Turn,Turn is taken from Ecclesiastes. Turns out Judas Priest was the friend of Frankie Lee. .Money was involved but  it was a roll of ten dollar bills  and not silver.

  10. Cream 1969. Eric Clapton and George Harrison teamed up to write Badge. Can’t say much about the lyrics but, the name seemed a little odd. Some folks think the name is referring to a chord progression. In actuality it’s kind of funny. George had a note attached  to the lead sheet that said “Bridge” and Clapton thought it said Badge. Harrison for contractual reasons couldn’t  be identified as the rhythm guitar player on the record. The record gave credit to L’Angelo Misterioso.

  11.    have you ever read the lyrics to a song and thought how hard could that have been. Or, what does that even mean? lyrics like  “When the owls cry in the night”,”oh baby when the pines begin to  cry” “oh baby the River’s red”. Those are lyrics from Four Sticks. it gives me pause for thought. Getting passed  the lyrics what about the song name Four Sticks. What sticks?  I read some song  interpretations by others  and they seem pretty bad.

I wonder what was  the song titled before Sticks ? It seems during the recording sessions the drummer had problems so, he started to use four sticks two in each hand and that’s when the light bulb flickered and someone decided to call the song four sticks.

The album cover appears to me an old man carrying a bundle of sticks. It’s looks pretty good.  It appears to be painted by Van Gogh and reminds me of “Starry Nights.”

Edit: last night I woke up about 3am and as I walked by a  window  an Owl flew past. It reminded me of Native American superstitions and four sticks. Sounds like a name that would have originated on the Great Plains.an I think the song might have a connection to Native Americans.

  12. No not Buddy Holly. The crash involved the Lynyrd Skynyrd band. I knew three members of the band were killed in a plane crash many years ago but, never new the reason. The pilots were relatively new to the plane and the amount of fuel it used compared to the plane they had been previously flying. So when they did their fuel math they apparently used the wrong numbers. Plus an engine problem that they were aware of but ignored was gobbling up even more fuel. They ran out of fuel while attempting to make a landing to check the fuel tanks. It seems one or both pilots assumed the fuel gauge had to be wrong.  Unfortunately the engines quit before they could land.

Fortunately running out of fuel is rare on commercial flights. Missing door bolts well, what can I say.

  13. Arnold Layne had a strange hobby indeed, but what I would like to know more about the name. Syd Barrett said the name just came to him. Close your eyes and pick a name, I doubt it’s Arnold Layne. He said it was based on a real person, but unknown to him. So, what’s  the secret Roger took to the grave. What about Syd, Roger seemed to tell different origin stories of his nick name.

Probably the only song written about someone stealing knickers off a  clothes line.

  14. “Have You Ever loved a Women”. Boy, this looks like a great slow blues tune for someone that’s up to session 14 to use with a looper. I have it in the key of C# by Billy Myles from the book “Slow Blues”  volume 94 Hal Leonard.

  15. I really wish I would have been exposed to music in my childhood, The other day I was working on a solo for “Amazing Grace” and in my research of  the song / hymn I came across “A Cappella”  (according to the chapel) being the dummy I am I had to google it. Granted I am an old guy and my memory might be letting me down, but I don’t think I ever heard the term.  Alla Capella.

  16. I always assumed this song was written in America by a born again Christian. So, I wasn’t surprised to learn that  it was written by an  poet/clergyman. But, an English author, that I didn’t expect nor that the author had worked as a  ship’s captain transporting slaves  in the 1700’s He  seemed to have found God after nearly being lost at sea, I assume while working on a slave ship. The hymn has appeared on  11,000 albums and I if my memory is correct seemed to have been adapted by the civil rights movement of the 1960s

  17. David Gilmour’s black strat was retired in 1986. It was on display at a Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas Tx. It was unprotected and apparently anyone could access it. When he got it back in 1990 it was damaged and the only original part was the pickup selector switch.

When I read that I was rather shocked. It would have become a million dollar guitar. I was also surprised his net worth was only $ 180,000,000.

  18. I came across a scale pattern that starts with G major scale  and runs through four keys G A C Db in 8 measures. It appears to comes from Mick Goodrich’s book “The Advancing Guitarist”. Anyone have this book? Can anyone explain why this 8 measure exercise is going to make me a better player?

  19.  I guess one could say it’s a variation of Nashville tuning. In Nashville tuning it seems  they are using the thicker strings that come with a 12 string set. In high strum they are using thinner unwound strings tuned to a higher octaveI. I never thought too much about either tunings  until I came across “Hey You”. I guess I need to go out and buy two more guitars.  😪

  20. While working on the solos used in “Comfortably Numb” and “Money” and I got sidetracked and came across the term pizzicato

“Pizzicato is an articulation generally associated with bowed instruments. It means plucked. Since the guitar is generally plucked the term has more to do with mimicking the sound.” You probably know it as palm muting. Below is a demo on violin. I thought it was going to be more complicated.

  21. Three -against -four rhythms. I was looking at some exercises where they played triads  while playing in 4/4 time. At first it didn’t’ sense because when I googled it I found three examples that were different. So, the term appears to be ubiquitous, but the ideas are interesting. The one I was looking at was playing triads where the Third triad in the measure finished in the following measure. One of the other examples I found on YouTube is below.
