Hey guys, I'm so excited... I'm one step closer to joining you at next year's gathering. I ran it by by my wife and she is ok in principle, but I recently went self employed and have to convince her I'll have sufficient work to fund it first (should be ok).

More seriously though, if I'm coming over to Tennessee then I really want to pop over to do the music tourist thing in Memphis while I'm there. I thought I'd try to book a flight, hotel, car package. However, one of my wife's friends has just sadly lost her husband in a tragic car accident (rental car) whilst he was working away in USA. Bad timing, I'm sure time will help but at the moment my wife doesn't want me to drive a rental car if I go to the gathering. Can I just ask those who know... how feasible (and safe) would it be to attend the conference and/or visit Memphis using just public transport/taxis?

Thanks

Ian

When we were in Nashville 2016, we rented a car for the day and drove the 3hrs , 1 straight highway to Memphis.

couldn't have been a more simple drive..

We stayed downtown (Marriott built in 1927),  so we didn't need a car once there,

We did tourist bus to Graceland,  etc. or walked

Beale St is small compared to Nashville's but has the Original BB King's (we liked Nashville's BB King's better)

plus Bass Pro shop there in Memphis has the tallest pyramid outside of Egypt,, like 500feet

That's great if you can make it Ian. I'm sure the members would be glad to meet you and you'd have a great time. I have yet to get to the GG  myself.  I dont know if you've been in the USA or Canada before, but if you haven't, I think you could be surprised how far it is from one place to the other, compared to England. Public transit is usually pretty good in the cities, but between cites, cars are still king. I was there once, and Mephis to Nashville was a fair jaunt.  BTW @Eracer_Team-DougH has all the scoop on hotels etc. (pricey)

Thank guys.

Yes, I’ve been to USA many times, but only ever to one city at a time except for once when a colleague and I hired a car to drive from LA to San Francisco.

I wondered if there might be a plane, bus, or train option from Nashville to Memphis.

@IanD, Greyhound has bus service to Memphis. Here is the Memphis web site for visitors. TripAdvisor had information --  that may be out of date -- indicating no train service.

Ian,

You might also be able to team up and share a ride with another conference attendee who is planning to visit Memphis (either before or after the conference). Just about every year, there are individuals who take a side trip to Memphis along with the conference.

Wow Ian, I am jealous!  I am keeping it free in my diary - just in case, but you seem to be a lot further down the road.  We did Nashville to Memphis and then Clarksdale in 2017.  Best holiday ever.....went to Gruhns and met Greg etc (everyone regarded that as a real high point) but sadly missed out on meeting up with Steve. That was the only downside.  What about the new flights direct to Nashville from London?

Nashville to Memphis is a 3hr drive

Car rental for the day is like $100, make sure you get unlimited mileage
