It was my privilege to play this "virtual duet" with the great jazz guitarist and teacher, Frank Vignola. This is part of a student ensemble collaboration in production by Frank's and student's at the "Jazz Studio" on Truefire.com.  This ensemble will likely appear on YouTube in the near future.

I played the melody.  Frank provide the excellent rhythm part and solo.

A popular 1920's "Jazz Standard" , "If I Had You" is a 1928 song by "Irving King" (Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly) with Ted Shapiro. Early hit versions in 1929 were by Rudy Vallée and Al Bowlly.[1]
Many other artists have recorded the song over the years.
More modern recordings were by such greats as Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Sarah Vaughan, and Nat King Cole. A classic!

In case your wondering this was recorded direct into Reaper DAW through my Scarlet 2i2 interface, with my Gibson ES335.

And Here's the YouTube Video where I play the opening bars of 'If I Had You", with 12 other players from 6 countries!

Hey everyone,

I don't have the ability to play difficult pieces (yet), so spend quite a lot of time trying to play simple pieces well. This song is fairly simple, but I wanted to work on maintaining an even fingerstyle arpeggio tempo (without a 'nome) whilst maintaining a gentle, but controlled vocal. I usually record at least some of my attempts, because I find the instant feedback really helps me to learn and improve (even/especially if it sounds really bad).

Anyway, I was quite pleased with how this session went. This is one, continuous 'live' take (one of about 6, the others were not so good!) that I simply recorded on a Zoom portable recorder and then I uploaded it into Logic just to add a bit of compression and gain to bring the levels up.

Ian

Awesome song Ian!

So glad I found this place again to listen to your expertise.

I just went through all the recordings here. I'm blown away at how good every one is doing.

In the past as some of you may know, I was addicted to recording.  Sometimes it was a song a day.  Some really bad, but I posted them so I could get constructive criticism.... and quite often I got it. 🙂

Just want to say keep up the recordings.

I think it makes you all better players and is seriously a LOT of fun!

This is my first attempt at recording and playing after a 4 year break.  I had to figure out from scratch how to record with my DAW, but it seemed to come back pretty quickly.   I have much work to do, but its a start.

Now, on to more interesting things.

Thanks in advance to anyone that listens to this.

Nice improv over a slow blues track!

Great to have you back Tom. This sounds great - you don't appear to have lost any of your ability in the last 4 years and this has such a familiar Dusty vibe to it. I look forward to hearing more as you blow the cobwebs off.

I'm looking for better tone.  Here is the same backing track as the last one, I noodled away on this to see what it sounds like. It sure sounded better in my ear than when I recorded it, but I could use a second opinion.  Getting good tone isn't something I have ever been good at.  I think there may be too much bass.

And please tell me the truth, don't sugar coat it. If it is really bad, say so, but an idea to make it better would be great.

Thanks for listening. I know you have better things to do, so I greatly appreciate it!

Tom, that sounded pretty darn good to me.  IMHO, I would suggest turning down the volume a bit on the backing track so it doesn't over power the lead. The bass on the backing track is fine.

I'm still a beginner so I can't provide constructive criticism, but that tone sounded really good to me. I'm actually curious to see what advice others can give because I wish mine sounded like that.

Tom; I'm not sure what sort of tone you're looking for, but that does sound pretty good to me... Personally I prefer a big warmer sound than this. You could experiment rolling off the guitar tone, neck pickup, or using a Humbucker pickup guitar (this sounds a bit like single coil to me). Maybe some different strings, like Nickle or Nickle-chrome. Joe Bonamassa says all the tone he needs is in the guitar and amp with just the tone, volume and reverb. Most just experiment until they find what they are looking for.

Thanks for listening Old Jock, Mr. Attitude, and Neil. I appreciate the comments.

I'm not playing through an amp, but into a LIne6 Toneport Silver, messing with effects. I'm also playing with my PRS, switch in middle.

I'm not happy with it yet, but will keep on testing.

This is a new take after some adjustments based on what was said here. I like this much better.

What do you think now?

Thanks for listening,

Tom

Blast from the past... This was a track I did with Kurt from Minnesota about 9 years ago.  Some of you may remember this and / or Kurt. I hope he is doing ok, don't know how to contact him.

This is my rendition of "Lewis & Clark," my favorite Tommy Emmanuel song. It's got elements from both the original recording from 2006 and the updated version from last year, plus a few of my own ideas. There are a few instances in the recording that sound like clipping or static of some kind, but I can't get rid of it. I had the levels low enough where clipping shouldn't have been an issue, and it wasn't apparent on the waveform, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I experimented with different settings, and also recorded some tests with mics instead of plugging in, and it was still there to different degrees. Maybe I have a problem with my interface. At any rate, thanks for listening.

Mike, that was FANTASTIC!  Blew me away.

Question... did you put the capo on there to find a sweet spot on the neck for comfort and closer frets or was there some other reason?

Thanks very much! When I learn a challenging piece like this, I slow down the original recording to various tempos and play along with them, gradually building speed. In addition to building speed, it helps me keep the right tempo. Tommy Emmanuel plays this song with a capo, so I did as well to avoid having to change the pitch of his recording as well as the tempo. I doubt if he needs any help with closer frets, so he probably did it to get the sound he wanted. Bonus for me, because it definitely helps with some of those stretches. I can play it without a capo and it still sounds good to my ear, but sweeter and easier with the capo.

Makes perfect sense Mike. I used to slow down songs also. I had a program called Riffmaster, but I found out that it is gone and I can't even launch it.  What do you use?  I'm looking at Song Surgeon, but I know there are others. Amazing Slow Downer comes to mind.
