O, Shenandoah, I long to hear you, away you rolling River.

Shenandoah, was among the songs in my early  collection of guitar books, Mel Bay‘s method books. One of the exercises consisted of two versions of Shenandoah, without lyrics. They were some of my favorites. Recently, I remembered the song and I pulled it up on the internet and was surprised to see it come up as a “Sea Shanty”.  I thought the song was about the Shenandoah Valley in W. Virginia. I would have bet money it was their state song.
A “River Shanty” might be a more accurate term. It was a “work song” sang by fur traders paddling the “Wide Missouri” No mention in the early song versions about any valley. Shenandoah, was the “Oneida Indian Chief“ What a surprise.

Shanty, a song  that consists of a series of  chorus lines and solos. The “Shantyman” was the “foreman”  of sorts who sang the solo and the crew sang the verse. Like a Blues “call and response”.
