Steve,

1)  Could you review the names of the other scales besides the major scale that we need to know and what are their patterns.  I have been trying to jam with some of the you tube videos that mention natural and harmonic minor scales and then blending those in with pentatonic scales.  For example this one:

2)  How do you switch or blend these scales with the pentatonics.

3)  I like trying to play along with these and other similiar tracts.  It really makes you think about where you are on the neck.

Thanks,   See you in June.  G.H.

We are under the gun tomorrow.  We made it through April with no tornadoes in Kansas.  First time in about 45 years.  May isn't looking so promising.

Hi Steve, could you please talk about song choices for a gig. Creating a list of songs you would play. A list you would jam with friends.

Love your live lessons.

Steve,

Anything to do with phrasing.  I'm struggling with how to take major scales/or pentatonic scales and move into a more "musical concept" with the knowledge on scales I now possess.  I am looking for a "rote approach" to get me started towards the freedom of expression I can't seem to unlock.  I need to unlock a way to crawl at this point without the "typewriter staccato" I now experience.  I'm looking for ways to add "empty space or silence" in my efforts.

Hoping to be there tonight

Hi Steve,

Started picking up on yesterday's lesson.  The bit about substitutions was very helpful and I will go back and give it more attention (for my note book - your suggestion ages ago).....but I have to say that intro was fantastic (as ever!).  This one seemed to be full of "money chords" ..am I right? I still have the Gibson's handouts. I could try and copy it chord by chord from the video or is there any chance of getting a copy of the chords/tab you were using?

@Steve Krenz

Re: "All The Things You Are"

I’m not a big fan of approaching jazz soloing from the perspective of the home key scale. It works fine with the chordal accompaniment, but ignoring the individual chords in the progression for the sake of simplicity may lead to playing lines that don’t outline the changes. In other words, the lines may lack implied harmony.

Obviously, we can’t think that fast and we have to memorize the solo until we have a vast enough vocabulary and are able to pre-hear what we’re gonna play, and then perhaps we will be able to improvise in the true meaning of the word.

I may be taking a more complicated approach to jazz than it needs to be, but I don’t mind. I’m just taking your advice: “Learn From Everywhere You Can.”

Gerard,

The concept of using the 3rd and 7th of the underlying chords in soloing is also explained in Session 19, and the bonus DVD contains a nice workout to practice this.

Thank you Wim. I know about Session 19. I was just thinking out loud in terms of pros and cons of the said approach. ?
