Yep - Artisan will always be my favorite (great customer service - and they did something very kind for me once - but that is another story) - but Gruhn is one of the guitar treasures of the world. And it is not only the guitars - stick around a while and talk to Mr. Gruhn (ask him anything about guitars or ask him to see his snakes - they really are pretty interesting) or Greg Voros (he gets my vote for the coolest guy on the planet).

Also - I believe that Germantown Guitars is now closed.

Less than 60 days away!

What are the hours for the GG? Sounds like there is a lot going on. I fly in on June 11 and leave on the 15.

I would have to go during the GG to see Gruhn. Is there time enough without missing something?

Thanks

Eric

Eric (@Sonicfreq), the normal hours at Gruhn's are Monday through Saturday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. If we assume that Steve follows the same timetable as last year, your best window is probably Tuesday afternoon June 11. There will be an early registration Tuesday at Trevecca from about 3:00 - 4:30, but that's optional. Nothing will be scheduled for the group as a whole on Tuesday evening. Typically after early registration we carpool to dinner and hit Third and Lindsley or the Station Inn if there's a good show. Then it will likely be nonstop until 4:30 Friday afternoon. We will probably wrap up around noon on Saturday, which might give you another window for Gruhn's, depending on when you have to get to the airport. There is also a remote chance that Steve might conduct a live lesson that week from Gruhn's, but I consider that unlikely because (1) now the number of attendees exceeds the capacity of the store and (2) it's not on the live lesson schedule. In mid May we can expect Steve's e-mail with the final schedule of events, an invitation to play in the student showcase, and sign up for guitar setups with Greg Voros. Our posts from last year's gathering are here, which should give you an idea of what to expect.

PS / Oops, sorry, I linked to the fingerstyle retreat; the gathering posts are here.

Last fall at the Fingerstyle retreat, a number of folks went to Artisan Guitars and they spoke very highly of the place. Never been there myself but they seemed to have had a great time. Gruhn's goes without saying, it's a must visit if you've never been there. It was wonderful last year when we got the upstairs tour, if that happens again this year it's well worth going.

@Dave White has updated this list as of July 10, 2021. It's attached as a PDF below because we had difficulty maintaining the links. As Dave advises: Note the hours of operation – some shops continue to only be open by appointment. My advice is to call and check with each shop in advance of your visit. There's info on:
• Artisan Guitars
• Carter Vintage Guitars
• Gruhn Guitars
• The North American Guitar (formerly Cotten Music)

A recent Acoustic Guitar article was based on these guitar shops of Nashville.  Fun read.

Any particular reason Rumble Seat Music has never been mentioned in this list?  I know nothing about them.  I just stumbled across a video on YouTube where a vintage Strat was being demonstrated.

And I'm doing my planning for our trip to Nashville in a few weeks to see Clapton.

And here is a question for you all.  We are going to spend several days in Nashville.  Should I:

  1. Get it all out of the way at once.  Visit all the guitar stores one day.  Get all the pain for my wife out of the way in one session?  Or,
  2. Sneak a guitar  store in.  Then do other things.  Sneak another guitar store in.  Do other things.  Continue until they are all visited.

Seeking advice here!

He Ron,

I visited Rumble Seat in July. It is a very small shop (with very few parking spaces) that is within walking distance from Gruhn's. It is worthwhile to visit just to see the collector guitars they have (one of Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitars - signed!) and other noteworthy guitars that could be in a museum. Everything is for sale - but bring a bank vault full of money if you are going to pick up Stevie Ray's or one of Ronnie Wood's guitars. They also had a wide assortment of amps and other music business related stuff as well as a handful of acoustic and electric guitars for sale. They were very friendly (the individual I spoke with used to work at Gruhn's). It was worth the visit.

As far as visiting the shops go - since Artisan has moved into Nashville, I typically hit the shops all at once. Carter's is within a couple miles of Gruhn's and North American and Artisan are right next to each other about a ten minute drive to the east of Carter's. And not too far from all of them is Gibson's new shop - which is outstanding. Visit all in one day and then go back to follow up on anything you are interested in the next day. 🙂

Inventory was down a bit at some of the shops when I visited during in July. Call ahead to check on shop hours and to make sure you don't need to reserve a time slot. Don't forget to spend some time on the second floor at Gruhn's.

Enjoy - and provide us with a full report!
