My submission for this recording challenge is Long Ago and Far Away, a jazz standard from 1944, from the movie Cover Girl, staring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly.  The song was made famous by Jo Stafford.  I recorded the rhythm and then the melody.  Thanks,

Cool Skip, this is a new one to me as well, but you performed it very well. Decided to investigate  the song further. Keep sharing!

Thanks Neil for the comments, and encouragement

@Skip Russell If I could offer a suggestion... You could work on your phrasing a bit more;  smoother with a bit of swing, maybe a slide or two. It would make a big difference.

@NeilES335 Thanks for the suggestion, Neil.  I may try that for version 2.

I haven't contributed to this recording challenge for quite a while. I have been refreshing my memory on recording skills lately so this is an attempt to put something out here.I could have tracked the downbeat much better  here ( I pride myself in following the snare well in live play with the band) and I sound a bit ridiculous trying to sing angry an octave lower than Delores ( couldn't match her high notes in her octave or easily her Irish lilt/yodel) , the lead singer of the Cranberries, so please forgive my meager attempt. I was tempted to bury it in the mix. My kids kept me current with their musical interests as they grew up. I am a sucker for heavy fuzz though I had a hard time matching the original here. Probably need to stick to clean from here on out. I downloaded a Karoake version that had several tracks that I could isolate and try to learn...many tracks, overdubs and redos, but the actual parts are relatively easy to learn. I used the drums and bass from the download and put in a little synth pad at the end . Just hard to put together to any satisfaction on my part. I ran out of gas trying to improve the production so for better or worse.....

@gotto, Hi Greg, you have done a super good job with this one!   I think I can also hear a little bit of an Irish accent in you singing too! Well done😊

@gotto this is an excellent recording Greg and it is great to have you back posting in the challenge. Beautifully played and sang, you did a superb job.

When I saw the title of the song I thought "this is going to be something weird that the younger generation like" but as you started to sing I recognised it. That is a great song born of a terrible time.

Hey thx Simira. I have finally recovered from my sciatica, so it feels good to have a guitar in my hand again.

Thx Mandy, I sure miss the other recording challenges but I am glad you have taken up the reins of leading this challenge...it is a nice place to find some very fine contributions of students from all parts distant in the world of The Guitar Gathering.

I hope you like like this snip of Jolene I did it with my mandolin.

That was nice. I never tried mandolin but like to see this monthly challenge expand to include other instruments.

I would love to learn the fingerstyle riff of this great song.

Wim.

Greg, this is a great rendition. I like that you recorded the complete song with several instruments and singing. It sounds really good.

The song is very catchy. After listening to your recording, it stayed on my mind for the rest of the day 😀

Thx Wim.  I learned a good bit by learning parts, practicing them enough to try to accurately reproduce them. Downloading the original karaoke tracks was a cool way to accomplish that. Great for ear training as well. Your kind comments are greatly appreciated.

That was great gotto! It is so different from your other material from whenever ago. Maybe keep playing with that fuzz? I thought it sounded good. After watching Rhett Shull explain how to use fuzz--i.e. for the most part not with strummed chords--I decided to buy a fuzz. I'm working on speed and accuracy with chords, but I figured that I can play single notes. Fuzz is such a hoot! And yeah, fuzz sounds lousy with strummed chords. Thanks for sharing.

Rock On!
