Good going Zeus and maintain your momentum.  Pretty soon you will be ready to "belly up to the barres."

Progress update............

First I can tell that I will be here a while.  But i'm making progress.

Started at 60 BPM and have progressed to 75 on my way to 84.  Had to cool my jets a little though because i was getting too quick and the chords were not clear enough for me.  The strumming exercises are a challenge but it's catching on.

Progress update..........

I knew this was not going to be quick if i was going to do it right.  I'm through the Session 6 lesson and am working on the Bonus for Session 6.  Chord changes.........hard work but worth it.

Side note - sometimes you wonder if all the time and work you put in is being noticed.  My 8 year old granddaughter told my wife one day while i was locked up practicing......"Pop is getting better!  It sounds good".  Love that girl!

@zeus7625 Thanks for sharing your progress. Great job so far... yes at times it will feel like an uphill battle, but  like your granddaughter says, you are getting better every time.  Soon you'll be playing some simple Christmas songs. Not too early to start, because you now know some basic chords and melody. Give it a shot!

@zeus7625   Well done "Pops" ! You're making good progress and getting into a level where you will indeed sound much better.  You should be able to play a few simple songs by now... I encourage you to pick up a beginner song book of whatever genre''  you like and have a go at those... Studying the mechanics of playing is great and very necessary. Do yourself a favour and be sure you have a solid grasp of the basic theory too as you move along. Enjoy S7!

Good luck as I am also in session 7....don’t get discouraged the barre chords do come with practice.... just a side note, the finger exercises I felt helped me to play the barre chords cleanly.... enjoy the ride

B7 chord .

Why is it so difficult to be consistent with that chord? Sometimes I make it and sometimes it sounds incorrect.

any idea?

HYA, this won't make you feel much better, I'm sure, but I think we all had difficulty with that chord.  I sure did. It's a lot of fingers in a small area.  It just takes a lot of practice developing the muscle memory getting those fingers to land in just that exact spot so the chord will ring clearly.   It will come.

HYA once you learn the barre chord version you'll never play an open B7 again.

I'm not sure I agree with that, Doug.  You don't think there is occasion that calls for the open chord version?

I love to play that chord in an acoustic blues in E.

So @HYA, we haven't heard from you.  How are you doing with that B7 chord?  We need progress reports😉  Actually what prompted me to write this is I thought about this thread last night.  I was at my weekly jam and one of the guys said "Let's do 'Nights in White Satin'".   And, of course, guess what's in "Nights in White Satin"!  So you are going to encounter the B7 in the wild.

And giving this thread a little more consideration, you aren't to the Blues session, session 13, yet.  When you do, you're going to learn about the "blues progression" or the I-IV-V chord progression.  Even if blues isn't your first choice for music,  most modern music is based on this I-IV-V.  And one of the most popular, "guitar friendly" keys is the E.  @Wim VD1 touched on this above.  The 5 chord in E is B.  And the 7th chords are frequently used in blues, rock, country, etc.

For learning most chords, for me, it was getting the string to ring out that I was fretting.  But for me, with the B7, it was getting the strings next to where I was fretting to ring.  I don't know about you or anyone else but my problem, primarily, was the open B string, the second string.  My third finger on the G (3rd) string, the A note, kept muting the B string.  It just took a lot of practice and significant amounts of cursing.

I hope you're making progress with the B7.  Let us know.

still struggling ...

I managed to play it clearly but it takes time to shape B7 chord.

Anyone have particular trouble with the Dm7 chord?  I can easily form it and play it if I use my 1st and 3rd fingers, but for the life of me I can't form it with my 1st and 2nd fingers.  Either the middle finger can't get curled/high enough to not mute the B string or when i try repositioning the barre doesn't let the E string ring out (pad of finger to soft/fleshy it seems like).

Hi S Bach,

I found the Dm7 to be a bit awkward at first too. Mostly I found I was muting the B string if I wasn't very careful.

I found it easier when I made sure my wrist was kept low, and for some reason, it it easier if I angle my index finger a bit.

Everyone's a bit different... play around with it and see if there are little adjustments you can make to get it to ring clear more consistently. Sometimes its just a matter of practice and trial and error.  You'll get it!

Hi all,

I haven't posted in awhile but I made it to session 6.  I've actually been here for a month or so, but I can't seem to make it past 54bpm, especially with the D/Asus switch.  Was wondering anyone's thoughts on pushing yourselves musically.  I feel like I know the basic process I need to learn the material on an initial level, but what is the balance between playing right and increasing speed at an appropriate pace?  If I play at 56 or 60 bpm and it sounds horrible, do I keep going until its good or go back to solidify concepts at 54bpm?

had to relook at S6 to see the lesson.

I see Steve's S6 strum pattern is Down/Up Down Down ~

Try start with just forming a Asus.. 4 down beats.. the jump to a D 4 down beats, the jump back to Asus ,etc.

then move it to 2 down beats each, then 1 beat each all down strokes before trying the down/up down down

idea is to get the jump from Asus to D and D to Asus smooth.. I find on the D chord my pinky which is doing nothing on the D chord leads me to the Asus as I play A
