I found this article interesting, it includes some wisdom from Mr Jimi Hendrix.

It is so true. It is easy to make a mental note of all of the "mistakes" that we make while playing but as the article says "Art is supposed to be free, not perfect".

Thanks, Mandy. On this theme, give a listen to Brent Vaarstra's podcast on Learn Jazz Standards: "Why I Stopped Hating My Playing". You can skip over the initial announcements to about 4:00, where you will hear the sound of me taking a bucket of cold water squarely in the face. Enjoy! I have to towel off, again.

Interesting @DianeB   (was that a co-incidence or was he talknig about you? 😉)

Here's a summary from this Podcast;

  1. Brent tells his story.

  2. Stop comparing yourself to others. Focus on your personal record.

  3. Play from where you are not from where you want to be. This means accepting where you are at on your musical journey all while working towards improvement.

  4. Don’t put all of your self-worth into music. You’re worth so much more. Don’t make this mistake.

  5. Remember that if music stops being fun for you, it means you took a wrong turn somewhere. Step back and re-evaluate.

While I'd love to think I will eventually play like my jazz guitar hero's like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, or Frank Vignola, I know this isn't very realistic. These artists started very young and dedicated their lives to it.  I do have goals and am always striving to be better.  But I try not to "get down on myself" and remember that this is for me a passionate hobby, and if it's not fun then it's time to take a short break and refocus in a not so serious vein.

Needed this one today. Practice was a bit disjointed, uncoordinated feeling or something.

We all have days /practice sessions like that... not to worry; just brush it off and go back to it the next time with a clear head. N

Well I cycle through self doubt all the time after a choir weekend.

As I know how many mistakes I made, wrong chords, muted, timing off , muffed lyrics,  etc

And you never know where there's a critic in the crowd.

I think that's what they're asking 😱

Does he know how to play 🤔

Thanks Mandy, great read and on point! Ties in with your humor too. :-)

I've  always been a quality guy, but working with others taught me that quantity can lead to quality: a whole lot of quality. Back in the simpler, gentler days of the Cold War, I became a quality controller for others who transcribed what they heard in the Russian language into an ancient computer. One new transcriber had tremendous typing speed and a good ear for prioritizing. We stopped her when necessary and gave guidance, which she took and ran with. She soon left her peers behind due to the volume of material she processed!

I often remember her with a smile while learning a new skill. I don't have to wonder about playing "as much materiel as possible" learning guitar. Ms. fast fingers showed me!
