Topic: TRIADS - Major Triads (1/3)

I'm excited to start a new teaching series on Triads!

If you're tired of playing the same old chords in the same old places let's learn some techniques to play great sounding guitar parts with chords all over the neck.

This will be a three week series continuing on for the next three Tuesdays.

Download the FREE 10 page book of examples, forms and progressions HERE.

Watch on our Guitar Gathering YouTube Channel HERE

There was some discussion yesterday in the chat regarding problems printing out the pdf for the lesson.  Some could print it.  Some could not.

I realized too late that I fell into the latter category.  I still can't print it.  Did anyone that was having difficulty figure this out?

Care to share how you resolved it?

Thanks Steve for this lesson. I have an idea about using chord structures like this for a while so I could go further up the neck but have not been able to form a structured process to work on the idea. You gave me what I needed! One question though: you mentioned a guitarist would not usually need to know triads on 6 through 4th strings, Why? maybe staying away from Bass guitar?  thanks AGAIN.   I have used neck diagrams with all notes to picture these triads in the past. it has help see them

No, Doug, I expected that to work but it didn't.  I think it was @William Nelson that thought it was a firewall issue.  He took it home and printed it from his tablet.

I tried printing it and the little revolving circle came up that told me it was doing something, thinking.  But nothing happened.  I sent it to my Canon Pro-100 printer.  If I go to the print que for the printer there is nothing in the que.  I also have a utility for making pdf's from a file.  it saves as a pdf on my hard drive.  If I send to it nothing happens.

Just weird.

I used my printer at work to print out the pdf. I tossed it into a folder to bring home without looking at it and when I got home I found that none of the figures printed! I had to scramble while the lesson started to reprint on my home printer.

For the printing, I saved it as a pdf and printed it from the pdf version and it came out just fine.

I'm very excited for the next lesson! I've been working on the triads up and down in the different keys, and finding them in 4ths as listed in the lesson handout. It has already begun to sink in and get easier finding the forms going up and down the neck! It was certainly a bit slow at first, as I tried to rely on just finding the forms on my own rather than reading the chord blocks, but I'm gaining speed!

Tonite I start practicing the I - IV - I  forms.

I'm hoping to be ready for the next one!! :)

Great lesson series Steve!! 😎

Revster,

Great question about why I didn't include the lower forms on string sets 3rd - 5th and 4th-6th.

Here's the short answer.  I'm a sucker for worksheets and could have gleefully added another 10 pages of exercises using the lower forms, but here's the deal.

Closed voicing triads done in lower registers start to sound muddy making it hard to distinguish the notes.

While, the lower voiced triads might be helpful in recognizing a few shapes and patterns, other than that I haven't found that they are used much in actual playing as chords.  So, I decided to just focus on the upper string forms.

But the helpful thing is that the major triad shapes on the 3rd-5th strings are the identical shapes for the same chords on the 4th-6th strings. (This is because the relationship of the tuning of the strings, in the interval of a fourth, is identical on all of the strings, 3rd-6th.)

The lower the register that you play in the wider of the intervals needed to sound good.

Hope this helps.  Learn all you can! - Steve

Printing issues aside, I found this session to be one of the most beneficial I have had since joining the gathering.    Perhaps my ability has finally caught up with some of the lessons.     But it’s a great feeling when you can say to yourself that “this finally makes sense!”      I’ll be traveling on business next week but I definitely plan to catch the replay for the minor triads.

Hi all, I am just starting with Triads and wanted to ask, if you play the triad using a pick, finger or play it finger style? Thanks for your comments.🎸🎼🎸

All of those will work; it depends on the song and what sound you're trying to create.

I'm still working on the first three Triad forms. I'm getting better but I keep hitting that 4th string every now and then drives me crazy.

Hey everyone. I’m having problems with strumming hand. How to not strum other strings? In 1-3 string set triads, I keep accidentally hitting the forth string.
thanks
