When you fret a note how close to your fingernail is the string?  When I look at the indentation made on my fingers it is about 3/16 from the nail. I am beginning to think, in my case, it’s too far. How many of you wear a size 14 or larger ring on your ring finger?

Well, I never really paid too much attention to this until now... I just measured and it seems to be a little different on each finger. Looks like it is around 2/16 for the most part, but on my ring finger it is a bit more. Then again, my fingers may be smaller overall. I think my ring size is between 7 and 8.

I generally just try to find the 'sweet spot' where I'm not muting the adjacent string.  But I'm sure my form can use a bit of adjustment for the better, lol! :)

I have no indentations in my fingers . learnt not to press hard to make them . and if i do have to then some things wrong with the guitar. Then fix it.  If cant fix it send it down the road.

Interesting topic, for what it's worth my ring size is 16 1/2 and the string indent, which is very slight, is 1/4" from the nail. I have always had to concentrate fretting on the fingertips.

I'm 13.5 ring, for what it's worth

My main goal like Barb, as long as my note is clear and not muting anything

Btw, my ring finger and pinky curve towards my middle finger, so I struggle with extending at some frets, my pinky wears most on it side.

So I'm a pretty percussive player as my notes aren't always clear.

I dont worry about where it is, just that I can.

Glad to hear from someone with larger fingers than myself.

Most of the time I don’t mute other strings. Then there are times when my fingers get at a angle to the string that causes problem. I notice in fingerstyle playing that every mistakes seems to be multiplied and string vibrations also becomes a factor.

Yea, It would be nice if one could exchange poorly designed fingers and thumbs.I notice that most women have a longer index finger than their ring finger. I always wondered if that gave them an edge when playing.

I am starting to realize that I do press to hard. The indentations really do seem to be too deep.Just another  thing that requires my attention.

I wish I could try out some smaller fingers.

It does require a lot of practice. But well worth it  no more pain or indents.

Like you Doug, my ring finger and pinky curve towards my thumb. Seems no amount of finger exercises can over come the broken fingers resulting from sports injuries. The ring finger seems to be trying but the pinky has a mind of its own. I try to adapt as much as I can but muting a string or two in the overall song is no big deal.
