Hello All.

Unfortunately the original recording challenge has disappeared, @matonanjin and Steve K are investigating.

This months Recording Challenge topic was suggested by @Wim VD1, he said

"The most wonderful time of the year is coming, so I suggest to have Christmas songs as the new challenge."

Here are the entries we have had so far (please let me know if I have missed anyone out).

1) @Fretless, he said "L&MG session 2 includes Jingle Bells. I wanted to do something different with the tune and so used a (sort of) bossa rhythm which makes me think of being on a beach in Rio de Janeiro on a hot summer's day, a complete contrast to the snow in the song."

2) @Wim VD1, he said "This is a bluesy arrangement of It Came Upon a Midnight Clear".

Wim.https://soundcloud.com/wim-van-damme-401299565/ep337-it-came-upon-a-midnight

3) Dan0725 playing "Noel" please see the post below for the video.

4) Nutty 1 playing "Last Christmas"

Come on forum members!!!!!  Submit your entries!

Now almost 1,900 member and only 2 submissions! Thank you @Fretless and @dan0725 for submitting yours.  Dan is one of our newest members and joined in!

@Randy120 and @Eracer_Team-DougH provided you with Jingle Bells lessons from complimentary sources.  I provided you with the link to Kelley Ritchie's lesson on O Little Town of Bethlehem and the tabs.   And, of course, most importantly we had Steve's hugely educational Live Lessons on December 3 and December 10!  Lessons complete with tabs. So you have lots of learning materials to choose from.

Remember, the topic this month is Christmas but it is a monthly challenge. Mandy will take your submission until December 31.  Right, Mandy?

And it is for all levels of learning.  It's called "Challenge" but it is no contest.  We just want to hear you play and see how you are doing.  The only challenge is that whoever Mandy picks will choose next months topic.

That's right. The challenge is a personal one for us all.

🎸Can we pick a song (or even just a small part of a song) from the suggested category and practice it and record it and post it in just 1 month? 🎸

😎Everyone who enters is a winner because they did it. 😎

I know that doing this really helped me to improve my playing.🎉

Here is me having a go at 'Last Christmas" by Wham. I am playing with my delay pedal here on "Shimmer", it fills in the sound but perhaps it is a bit too weird. I don't know, you decide. Any comments would be gratefully received.

I have been here long enough to see your progress to date. I am so impressed at seeing your steady and continual improvement to the point that this song demonstrates - and that is that you are the whole package: you can sing, you can play, you can record and edit audio and video, all to a competent level, none of which I can remember seeing 4 years ago, and added to that you deliver your songs with a great sense of humour and the sparkliest guitar I have ever seen!

Thank you @Fretless, I really appreciate your kind words. I know that the encouragement and advice that I have received from you and others has really helped me to progress.

Yes I bought that guitar because it is easy for someone with small hands to play and crazy sparkly. It appealed to my sense of humour I do not usually go for "girly" pink stuff . It does look amazing in the right lighting.

Anyone out there who wants a guitar for small hands should not be put off by the brand Daisy Rock, they are Schecter "in a skirt" and they are not all in "girly" colours. 🎸

Mandy I remember the Christmas I bought my daughter that Daisy Rock Red Sparkle guitar.. and the tears she had. you can't get those any more from them as far as I know.

you would think that Christmas would be right up my alley to record cause I run a Catholic Children's Choir.. problem is..

not that I'm that good as submitting recordings on these "monthly" challenges but at Christmas Season its even crazier playing and practice schedule for me. and to record my choir in church.. that would be a big no no for me.

glad we have some submissions for this month.

I am glad that your daughter liked hers, there are still a few around here in the UK.

I understand that you are really busy as is anyone who plays in church or any other band. I enjoy reading about your musical adventures. Happy Christmas!🎊🎄🎁

@Nutty 1 thanks and Merry Christmas to you Mandy and all our LMG /GG family.

I can't access the line out of the mixer like I used to, and RC Church has enough issues with young kids which makes it hard for audio let alone video recording.

I did a Fingerstyle on Silent Night, with the kids, . And I had a few comments that I think I did a "good" job on it.

With my own practice,  and church played close to 4hrs yesterday.

Wife got 1 picture during the concert part before mass, with me and the director

We were at capacity of about 700, not as many as I expected at a packed 1200,

I would not be playing live weekly  (albeit only rhythm) if it wasn't for Steve K and LMG

(Director on BC Rich 12 string, and I have a Godin Kingpin 5th Ave with a P90 pickup with a floor monitor)

I would guess that stage fright is not an issue if you are playing in front of 700 or so, keep up the good work!

Merry Christmas,

@NueGene when I was a solo musician directing the choir for 2 weekends leading into Christmas,  you tend to swet a bit when you're it, knowing any mistake can only becoming from you.

Great photo @Eracer_Team-DougH.

The fact that you said "only rhythm" is another measure of how far you have come along in your guitar journey. I have never played in a band and am now at the stage where I need to force myself to practice playing to drum beats and figure out what beats and how to lock in with them.

Congratulations on all of your hard work in the past and present. I really admire people who play live.

To everyone else who is reading this: The first step beginners can make towards playing live is to record themselves and evaluate their playing, the next step is to share your recordings on a safe platform. This forum is a great place to share because you will not get negative comments as they are not permitted by our wonderful moderators. 😎👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

@Nutty 1 thank you for posting your playing.  I don't know what to add beyond what @Fretless said.  I've been around this forum for a while and am also "so impressed at seeing your steady and continual improvement".   Great playing and singing and, no, the delay did not at all sound "too weird".   Thanks again for sharing this.
