Music Reading Book

Last night we had a breeze blowing the “Aspen Camp Fire”  smoke and ash away. I decided  to sit outside having been stuck inside for days because of smoke. I took the book “Reading Music”  by David Oakes with me.When  I got to chapter 7 “introducing the 12 position”   It got my attention because I always see players soloing in that position and I only have a few go to notes there.

This morning I grabbed the book and went to a “Duet exercise”  it’s was written in the 5th and 12th position. After a few minutes in the 12 position  I realized  this was new territory, even though I knew “the neighborhood  it felt different driving around”. The  higher ledger lines were initially confusing.Thirty minutes later I was  reading 12 position notation  and felt a lot more  comfortable moving around. I spend most of my time on acoustic and switching to electric is obviously the way to go here. Learning more melodies lines  in this position can only help find  potential phrases.

The author recommends you have two years of playing experience but never really got serious about reading music before buying his book.

I definitely will keep this book near the music stand.
