PRS

[Triple-o]

I found a store with a used PRS McCarty  594 so I decided to drive 2 hours to see it.
 

When I got there the guitar had 2 knobs ( volume and tone)not the 4  I was expecting to see and It didn’t say McCarty on the headstock.The salesman reminded me it’s was used and perhaps the previous owner removed two knobs  along with the McCarty  name. The tag on it if I remember  said “standard.”  Two knobs  obviously had  not been removed.   

This guitar didn’t have any structural damage, scratches or dents but the hardware looked faded.The guitar in general just looked “worn-out”. The veneer top was “book matched” but apparently  from different “books”. I was disappointed with its  general appearance. Based on my searches it might have been a  1995- 2006 guitar? Curious if the newer ones  ( last 5 years) PRS  $1000 SE models are holding up appearance-wise?

Edit. I found an article that said some of the guitars of that era had moisture trapped under the finish and  over the years moisture make the finish look “ clouding” The nut, knobs, pick-up and pots might also need  to be changed out.They changed the type of finish they use in 201. and the older models   may not have had  the McCarty name on the front.They wanted $500.

I can’t speak for the older ones but I have a McCarty 594 single cut SE that is maybe three or four years old.    No signs of any finish fading or other flaws that I can find.   Of course I do keep it in the case so it is not exposed to sun or fluorescent lighting that could accelerate any fading.

Thanks, from what I read they seem to have solved that finish problem  after 2010 models.
