So What! …..  No  the jazz standard “So What” by Miles Davies. I probably seen this standard in the Real Book before and passed over it thinking it was piano music.Knowing Miles played the trumpet didn’t raise any red flags. Anyway  when I was looking at the lead sheet the other day I noticed it only had three chords  E-7 ,F-7, and D-7.

The additional clef looked like it was piano music but it wasn’t tied to the “G clefthen I thought perhaps it’s for  bass guitar” notation. ( all cows eat grass) I just ignored it and played it like it was standard guitar music and it sounded fine to me. I also brushed off the 8va. Turns out “So What”  is one of the most famous modal jazz standards, it’s played in D Dorian. I did notice that one lesson on YouTube the teacher tuned her E string to down to D for the bass part. This standard seems like a real beginners jazz standard to play, I read where it was a “call and response” style the bass line being the “call” and the two chords the “response” . The chords take the place  of a  trumpet response.

PS. if you don’t have The  Real book” 6 th edition next time you’re in a music store you should take a look at it  even if you are a beginner.I am not sure why it doesn’t have the lyrics but if find something you like you can always find the lyrics.
