Today was one of those days where guitar practice lasted 6 hours. I was using the book “Connecting Pentatonic  Patterns”  by Tom Kolb. The practice session  ended with a study into minor pentatonic substitution, E minor pentatonic and E Dorian. The book showed how easy it was to go from  E minor pentatonic  into E Dorian without knowing you made the switch.  The examples were in the 12 position. You could just stay in pattern 1 and add C# and F #  or you could Move up two frets, E to F# (F# minor pentatonic pattern 1) and be  in E Dorian territory. You just need to keep in mind the changes in intervals. You essentially play the E Dorian mode with two minor pentatonic scales.

I noticed on youtube player talking about  3- 2 trains, 3- 2 patterns or  diagonal pentatonics. The  book shows those 3 -2 patterns, but he refers to them  as extension boxes.

E MINOR Pentatonic E G A B D

E Dorian   E G A B D and  C# F#

F# minor pentatonic F# A B C# E

Helo Triple-o,

Your E Dorian can also be called the E harmonic minor scale.

Keep up the learning and practising.

Fretless.
