If you Use The D'Addario Humidity Packs and they get hard  in the winter time . Dried out from putting moisture back in to your guitar. all you have to do is stick them in the freezer over night and they will be good to go again.  them will draw moisture from the cold . Just squeeze them and break them loose and soft again. Had mine for two years . still works great .

I have always been pleased with these. I will have to try putting then in the freezer. I change out the packs in my acoustic case every year and move the old packs to my solid body electric cases where humidity is not as critical.

They recommend every 3 months or so, but mine has lasted much longer. They should be replaced occasionally to avoid breakage. I use the Humidipack with my Taylor nylon string. Humidipack sure beats the sponge systems. I have the Planet Waves and you have to rewet the sponge every 3-4 days this time of year.

I haven't had the best luck with those. Living in the upper midwest where it's very dry in the winter, they need to be replaced in just a couple of weeks.

I really like the Oasis humidifiers though. I bought one for the soundhole of my acoustic and another one to put in the case, and the humidity in there stays right around 45 or 50. You just refill it with water (instructions recommend distilled water) when it shrivels up, and use one of the refill packs every so often.

They definitely dry out. I have seen humidity at 18% during the winter in NH. The average annual humidity in the Sahara desert is 25%. I use a whole house humidifier in the same room with the guitars to keep things closer to 50% humidity.
