One of Steve Krenz's pro tips was change the strings often. I only own a nylon string guitar and I love it when the nylon strings stop stretching and stay in tune during an entire practice session. But it takes a week or longer before this happens. Is there a way to get the nylon strings to stay in tune better when using the strings for only a short time before putting new strings on again? (Tune the strings up a couple steps when first putting them on then back down, or something?) Thanks, Kevin

Kevin - This is not an answer to your question - but I don't change nylon strings very often. I probably leave nylon strings on 6-9 months before changing them (and I play my nylon string guitar almost every day).

You are correct - it takes a week (or more) for nylon strings to settle in. I also find that nylon strings are affected by changes in the weather much more than steel strings. I typically need to tune my nylon string guitar before playing while I have several steel string guitars that always stay in tune.

There is no quick way. Nylon strings last a long time. Stretching the strings is the best way to set them, but you will have to do it many times after a string change. Yes changing your strings will make your sound brighter, but don't change them because of some artificial schedule. Analyze the condition of the strings and change them when needed.

Nylon strings get replaced less frequently than bass strings.. And for most bass players - that's saying a lot. I would say depending on how the strings are cared for, I would say twice a year is probably fine. The stretching process takes far too long to replace them more often. Wipe down the strings after each time its played and that will help with the string life.
