Picked up a fender squire strat from a friend and think it may be worth doing some mods. Has anyone replaced the tuners with locked tuners or smoothed the edges on the fretboard? I have only done string replacements. Is this easy to do for first timer or bring it in to a shop. Also, would like to get a better amp, any recommendations for use with the squire strat? Thanks for any feedback 🎼🎸

I put them into a Academy clone Strat.

Went in like the guitar without issues.

They have chrome, gold and black.

I bought black

I have smoothed the edges of frets with a small metal file, if you do it carefully and gently you will not affect the finish on the fretboard and neck. You do not have to press hard or do much.

I have a Yamaha THR5a modelling amp for my practice (and playing!), it has some nice built in effects. I have never needed to put it up to full volume or anything approaching that, not even for the distorted simulations. They also do bigger THR amps with even more effects. May be worth a look at.🤓

Thanks for all the comments and hate to ask what I feel is a stupid question....when shopping for an amp do you normally bring your guitar? Looking forward to testing the amps recommended....🎼🎸

That's acutally a very good idea.  Sometimes you can find a very similar guitar in the store and use that, but I don't think any good store would object to you bringing in your own guitar.. I intend to do this once I've narrowed down the choices. (and hopefully can find them at the same store at the same time... like an "A" or "B" test) Nothing sounds quite the same as your own guitar.

Bringing your guitar is a good idea.

No sensible, logical store is going to refuse your bringing your own guitar in if they think they are going to get an amp sale.

Thanks for your comments, as I begin this journey, as there is so much on the marketplace...and being first time serious buyer...they will most likely all sound good...boss katana 50 seems pretty good....any ideas about Marshall as they were the main player when I was a lot younger many moons ago🎸Happy 4th to all and appreciate all the feedback 🎼

@ChrisJ032I will avoid suggesting particular amps, but I would suggest you keep it simple. Some the digital amps have many menus , screen, settings and so forth which add various effects and look attractive. I found these kinds too "fiddley" and ultimately they detracted from my playind and practice. For home practice all you really need is a decent sounding low power amp with eq and reverb . Play them before you buy.

@ChrisJ032 @NeilES335

Chris I have to say I agree with Neil.

Play amps side by side in the store and let your ears tell you the tone it likes.

Katana's get a lot of love on this forum.

I found in the store that Katana's on thier own sound pretty good, till you play some other amp next to it and my ears went wow.

Won't say what amp was next to it.

Lot to be said for a amp with just a volume and tone control and use of your guitar volume and tone control

Hi Chris,

Amp shopping is a journey that will likely lead you down many roads over a long period of time.  I noticed your comment RE: Marshalls and I thought I'd throw out that "Marshall" covers a lot of territory.  If you are looking in the price range of the Katana, I personally would take the Katana over any digital Marshall.  It is an amp that could take you from bedroom to small bar gigs at an entry level price.  There are other cool small amps int that price range if you don't also need something to deliver band volume.

If you move up from the Katana price point. There is a big price jump to entry level Tube Marshalls (or other major name brands)  like the Origin Series and then double plus some to get to amps some Marshall purists will tell you are the first "real Marshall". With any tube amp, including a Marshall, they sound best at full band volume and can be difficult to get the sound you want at more reasonable volume for solo practice at home. Many folks buy tube amps and are shocked at how loud they need to be to get that tube sound.

I was a tube amp guy for many years, and keep a tube amp at our rehearsal space for use with my band at full volume.  However, at home in my practice studio and out at gigs, I use a Helix Guitar processor through a PA monitor, as it sounds great at bedroom volume up to full band level (there is some tweaking involved between low volume and full blast). That said I know a mid-high range modeler like a Helix plus a monitor is not an entry level price point for most folks, but is in the price range with mid to high level tube amps but offers a lot of versatility for someone considering options in that price range and it includes dozens of amp models and hundreds of pedal models to help keep future GAS at bay.

Thought I'd throw out some things to mull over as you do your research.

Good luck.
