Added a Ltd Deluxe Thinline Tele to the stable. Very sweet guitar. Light weight and a great neck. I really like the fourth position, bridge and neck in series. Gives a very rich, full boost.

Also added a Ltd Edition '65 Princeton Reverb. Western tolex looks kinda cool, but wasn't really a strong selling point for me. The 12" speaker was a plus. Amazing cleans with plenty of headroom.

Happy early birthday and anniversary to me!

Very nice Mike...

With the Princeton, are the 2 "Instrument" inputs for 2 guitars, or is 1 a "clean channel" and the other "dirty" ie distorted channel? How do you find the clean tones?  When you say there a lot of "headroom",  does that mean you can turn up the volume with little or no distortion until it gets really loud? Is the amp suitable for playing at home or is this more of a performance "gigging" amp?  I'd appreciate your input while shopping around...  Regards; Neil

Neil,

Input 1 is full sensitivity for most guitars. Input 2 is lower sensitivity, intended for guitars with hotter pickups to give them a cleaner tone. You can also plug in two guitars at the same time. Per the manual, the sensitivity for both would be the same when used at the same time, though it doesn't say if they would be full or lower sensitivity. The cleans are pristine. I absolutely love the tone. Yes, by "headroom" I mean you have to crank it up pretty loud before it starts to break up. That works for me as I generally prefer clean tone. If I want overdrive, I'll use a pedal (Boss BD-2 Blues Driver to be exact), and get some crunch at much lower volume than the natural amp break-up. To me it's a perfect amp for playing at home if you want cleans. It sounds really sweet a low volume, but it can also get plenty loud. I don't gig, but I do play in church. It would be plenty of amp for that, and probably for most small gigs. Larger gigs too if you mic'd it. I highly recommend it. I A/B'd it against a '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb and liked the Princeton better. YMMV. Check one out if you get a chance, and happy shopping!

Mike

@Mike HoodenpyleThanks Mike. Ive been drawn to these amps for a while. There is a FSR  laquered tweed version with a 12" hemp cone speaker (Canabis Rex) that offers a more mellow tone that sounds attractive ($1300 Cdn) but so far I cant find one in stock anywhere to try out without placing an order and waiting about 3 weeks.

By chance have you tried it with a humbucker guitar with tone rolled back for a jazz tone?

Regards. Neil

@NeilES335 The FSR you describe sounds like the Sweetwater-exclusive version, so you won't find one of those to try if that's the case. I haven't tried humbuckers yet, but I get a really nice, smooth jazz tone with tele and strat neck pickups.

@Mike Hoodenpyle They are on Long and McQuade website( Canada) as an exclusive run.

The Princeton should work very well with even melower clean tone using a h'b pup like on my ES335 or ES137.

Congrats.  I got to borrow a PR from a buddy, so got to play one for a while.  It's a really killer little amp.  I'm pretty much digital now, but my main amp model is the Fender Deluxe which is the closest thing in the Helix to that Princeton.

Well, after much research, mulling over etc.,  I finally decided on the "Fender FSR Princeton "65 Re-issue in tweed with Eminence 12" CR speaker 😊. Picked it up today .... didnt have time to open the box yet!  Thanks to @Mike Hoodenpylefor the advice and my guitar buddy @Eracer_Team-DougH for helping me select it in a head to head comparison with other amps. More to follow..

@NeilES335 If I didn't have my YGL2a with the WGS speaker in it.. I probably would have tried to get one of those Cannabis Rex speakered Fender's as well.

maybe I'll have to rent one on half price rental day in Nov

The real catch is, you need to hear the 12" Cannabis Rex speaker over the 10" standard speaker

Well I finally got the chance to unbox and give the first run with the new Princeton, and I must say it surely does not disappoint!

It's eveything I expected and hoped for, and much more. Crystal clear clean tones, warm and mellow, extremely touch sensitive, with virtually no background noise or hum.

It will take a while to get used to dialing up exactly the tone I'm looking for, but a sampling with all 3 of my electrics showed the character of each of them, with a very impressive jazz tone available with my Godin 5th Ave archtop and P90 style pickup.

In a head to head test in the store, Doug and I tested the "standard" Princeton 65 RI against this "Fender Special Run" model with the Eminence Cannabis Rex (Hemp) 12 " speaker, (no you dont smoke it!). The difference was obvious in seconds... this model is indeed "Special" ... warmer, cleaner, smoother across the board in all levlels and eq.

My concern about getting good tone at low volume was quicky put aside, as this "practise amp" delivers superior tone at only about 3 or 4 on the Volume knob.  Using the 335 with humbuckers on Input 2 (designed for higher output pickups) produces outstanding clarity, without being sharp or brittle. Using Input 1 increased the volume level and would be outstanding for a single coil equiped gutiar like a Strat or Tele, playing lead.  If it's volume you want, then you'll surely get plenty for home use, recording or smallish stage performance or much larger venues mic'd up to a p.a.  (I havent had it over 4 on the volume at home) I'm told you'll get some modest "break up " startint at around 5 or 6 on the dial.

The internal reverb and vibrato with external foot switch,  are very responsive, and all I will need in the way of effects (i think), so pedals for me won't likely be on my list. It also comes with a nice black nylon cover with Fender script logo... a nice touch to go with the outstanding "retro 60's " laquer tweed vibe.  The perfect companion for my  ES 335 ""63 historic ReIssue " !

I just put about 2 hours on it so far, but it was and is a treat to play...

And the bonus... my wife loves it too. 🙂 (if I dont play too loud... )
