I am ordering a strap for my new guitar when it occurred to me that there may be some new members on here that haven't heard of Lakota Guitar Straps (Lakota Leathers).

I have three of them now and they are unbelievably comfortable.  All are made from buffalo and should last forever.  They do come with a lifetime warranty.  There are several other members on here that also use them and have commented favorably about their experience with these straps.

Possibly most importantly, all straps are made by members of the Lakota Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.  The Pine Ridge "Rez" is the poorest county in the United States.  Any purchase will, in a small way, help people in desperate need of economic stimulation.  If you are, or will be, looking for a new strap(s) at least look at their product/website.

Now all I have to do is decide which color will go best with Whale Blue!9_9

(I have absolutely no connection to Lakota Leathers other than I like their product.)

I have one Lakota strap, thinking of getting a couple more. They are very comfortable and look great.

I might be in the market for a strap, but the reason is one of the straps I bought a few years ago proved to be a bit too supple/soft.

It still work's fine, but the slots for the tail have sort of stretched out since the leather is so soft, and it looks kind of crappy.  I have a couple of much stiffer straps that are fine comfort wise so I'm fine with a bit stiffer leather so long as it retains its shape.

So my question is, exactly how "soft" are they and how do they behave over time?

Mine is the American Bison (chocolate) 3”, three years old an used regularly. It still looks brand new and shows no sign of stretching.

Six, as you described it they they might be too soft.  Any answer that I gave you wouldn't be much help as I haven't had them long enough or use them enough.  I don't gig so mine haven't seen that much abuse.  @Oldjock's response is much more relevant than anything I might offer.  The other thing you could do is contact Lakota Leather's owner.  I have found him to be very responsive to queries by email.  He is #1 a player himself (I think primarily acoustic) and #2 surely he has users that have had them long enough and abuse them enough to give an objective answer.  His phone is 1 (865) 963-9303 or you can go to his page and there is the typical "contact us" form.

Six you may want to get yourself a Grolsch washer or two. Put these on your peg after the strap. They work great, never lost a loose strap with one on. You can get them at a home Brew store by the bag. You don't need to pay premium prices from Joe B. the merchandiser.

Cheers

This bag is $8.50 on Amazon.

Its not the peg hole that's streched (probably because there is a Schaller strap lock in it).  Its the elongated holes you thread the tail section through that have pulled open and look bad.

I tend to sling my guitar slightly low (not Slash like, but not classical style either) so the tail is through the last or next to last slot on all my straps.  On the one in question the soft leather has let them pull open from the weight pulling from below them.  It works fine and is comfortable, it just looks a bit like a guy wearing a too tight shirt where every button hole is pulled open.

Hi Six, not sure this will help, I was checking out Hillside Leather USA for new riding leather's and they have a header that explains the different animal leather's they use [Bison, Horse, and Cow's Leather's] It helped me to understand the difference's to them. I have a Lakota Bison strap really nice.  bruster  :)

Six,

I posed your question to Kenny, the owner, and this is the response I received:

"Thanks Ron.. sometimes if one of our straps comes from 'belly' leather that might happen.. but no worries.. we offer a lifetime guarantee.. so if you or he ever experiences any sort of issue, it can be exchanged for a brand new one! thanks so much, Kenny"

I don't know if this answers your question or not.

Well it answers the unasked question about what kind of Company they are.  Anytime you are able to directly reach the owner and get a reply that quick, its a pretty good sign.

I will give them a shot if I do decide on a new strap.  A tad more than I'd like to spend but, who doesn't like supporting a company with that kind of customer response.

Thanks for the info Mantonanjin. I went to the site yesterday to get a strap for my new guitar. Boneheaded me I made a mistake, clicked the wrong button and needed to get Pay Pal out of the purchase. Kenny called me, refunded pay pal and we talked for over an hour. Nice, personable guy. Been through some tragedy as well.

I'm kind of partial, as my wife was Cherokee and Apache, but I like to support the Native businesses when I can.  Great people that we can all learn from.

I found a 3" strap that will go with the colour of my new Les Paul. Since the guitar is a big block of wood, the 3" strap will help. The Les Paul has the shortest neck and  is 2 pounds heavier than my SG-400. Neck length from shortest to longest in my guitars are Les Paul, Fender Strat and then the SG-400 Pro by a long shot.

Now I have to go and buy a sixer of Grolsch so I can get some washers   :D

Grog, I'm glad you had the positive with Lakota Straps, the pleasant conversation with Kenny, and that you got the strap.  I've spoken with Kenny but never to the extent that you have.  Always very professional on the phone but I was not aware of the tragedy he experienced.

I am most likely heading to the Pine Ridge reservation in a few weeks.  One doesn't need to spend any length of time at all to realize that any economic help, however small, is felt.  Yours will be.

When I started this thread I went with the 3" as well. First off I  had a conversation with my wife about what color strap will be best coordinated with my new PRS HB.  I, of course, couldn't make that sartorial decision individually:/  Answer: Black.   But this guitar is so light I sure don't need that 3" wide; 2" should be fine.  But I reasoned that should I ever switch it to another guitar I may.  And it's only $10 difference.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Lakota Leathers.

I have 2 Lakota Straps and with light-medium use for the last 3 years I could not be happier with them!

Strong and comfortable! :)

Our local Guitar store has them in stock, so they are getting out there.
