Hi Greg,

What products do you recommend now that Professor Green's is out of business?

Greg,

I just finished my first electric setup on a used I-35C Collings using the Les Paul setup in your course.   The pickup height is as recommended (1/16").  The G string intonation matches on both the open and 12th fret.  However, when I play the G string, especially up the fretboard, I get a flat-sounding or jangled (off) tone.  All of the other strings sound okay.  The pickup poles do not appear to follow the radius.  Any suggestions?

On another note, I am assuming when measuring string height/pickup heights the measurement is from the bottom of the string in question.

Thanks,

Bryan

Greg,

Thank you for being so kind and generous with your time and talent to all of us who attended the Guitar Gathering conference! You are so knowledgeable, personable, and fun to be around. Everything from my guitar setups to the class you taught to the Gruhn’s tour was fantastic.

It’s an honor to be around someone at the very top of their profession, to say nothing of the admiration we all feel when that person is still humble and gracious. You didn’t have to do any of this, but you went a long way out of your way to give a great day to some total strangers. We appreciate you very much!

Thank you so much!

It was my pleasure. I enjoyed spending time with all of you fine folks.

Bryan,

I think that I was able to answer or get you going in the right direction when your question was posted elsewhere on this forum. In a nutshell, I would change the problematic string first and re-assess your intonation issue. Keep in touch, I want to be sure you got it straightened out.

Greg,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.  I am waiting on D'Addario replacement strings to assess if the problem corrects itself.  I've tried most of the suggestions given here and so far, nothing has changed the off tone it gives when fretted.   I've never experienced a "bad" string following a restring on my acoustics, so it's new territory for me on the electric.  Thanks again for your advice.

Enjoy the weekend,

Bryan

Hey guys I'm back and I need your help! I'm cleaning my guitar and noticed there is quite a lot of wear specifically on the B string bridge pin slot. I think I might have mixed the pins around by accident the first time around. How do I tell which bridge pin goes in what slot and could this be the issue?

All bridge pins are the same it should not matter which one is in the hole and some ware is normal .

Also if you look at the winding on the B string it looks much higher than the others, I've pulled it and everything to make sure it is tight.IMG_3796.JPG.ee8b4daf8528e7698159a2cf7bd19460.JPG

Because he ream them out to fit each pin . you can put the same pin in the same hole . but if you buy new pins they dont come numbered for each hole they are just pins,

My guitars has groves cut in the bridge for the strings to lay in . that was cut by a guitar tech. the same grove your B string is cutting. but in all the holes.

Ok got it, I'll sort out the E string now. But it does seem that the pin isn't grabbing the ball on the B string when it is in the slot. The ball just keeps twisting. Any ideas?

I bend the string about 1/2 a inch up from the ball where the ball is at a 90 degrees and put it in the hole where the ball is at a 90 degrees to the bridge and pin and you can hold it there.

Also when you put the ball into the hole. Push your thumb on the pin when pulling the sting up with the other hand

Helps seat the ball against the pin

@IOM Sammy The pins are the same and you don't need to use any special tool to ream the whole. Bend a 1/2 inch at ball end like Blue Dog stated. Slotted side of pin towards the string. Push down on the pin while pulling up on the string will set it. The rest is just string tension.

A last note, keep the tension on the string while you wind the string around the tuner.  It's possible to have the pin raise up a little if you aren't careful.  If the pin does raise up, don't try to press it back down under tension.  I have been told damage to the wood brace under the bridge can result (not good).  I recall Greg holds a finger down on the pin when he stretches the string prior to final tuning as well.

Regards,

Bryan

Greg,

The replacement strings arrived and I got one installed from D'Addario.  It seems to have solved the problem I was experiencing as you had suggested.  Thanks for the "professional" insight into my dilemma.   The customer service was very considerate in trying to resolve my problem but multiple emails to straighten out what was sent me was a bit frustrating.  I think more of a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

Thanks again for the insight into my question, it is very much appreciated.

On a different note, a local luthier was helping me with a tuning knob on the A string that snapped on a Waverly three on a plate open slot acoustic setup.  Unknown to me, Waverly have a lifetime warranty  on their tuners and a new set of tuners are in the mail from StewMac.  I'm not sure about shipping, but either way it's a warranty I wanted to share with GG friends.   All this chaos from one who pampers his guitars...go figure! ?

Regards,

Bryan

Hey folks,

Great advice from all BTW.

Ok,  the bridge pin issue is pretty straight forward; the pin should fit snug just before the ball top or its collar. Yes, pins are all the same or should be on most guitars but the hole size might be a hair off. I would make a habit of placing the pins in order when restringing the instrument so that they go back the same way they came out. If one happens not to fit right, I would try to swap pins before taking a 3 or 5 degree reamer to it.

I hope this was of help,

Greg V.

Hi @Greg Voros,

I came across a used '52 reissue Telecaster at a good price so I picked it up. I like the guitar but I notice that I'm not able to get the action on the 1st or 6th string as low as I'd like - it has the old style brass saddles and the saddles are already adjusted as low as they can go. I think this means the neck might need a shim, does that sound correct to you? Would you recommend using some of the pre-made wooden ones that are available online?

Also, does it seem unusual that a guitar that is about 7-8 years old might need one? What causes a guitar over time to develop this condition, and is it anything to worry about?

Thank you!

Hi @Greg Voros, Winter is coming and humidification is important. I usually have a whole house humidifier. I have also use the Planet Waves sponge system.

Taylor recommends Humidipack. I was wondering what you think of the system, and how frequent to replace these packs. My experience is they seem to last much longer than the 3-6 months recommended. I just replace old packs and they were plump with moisture. I can't imagine my guitar wouldn't have absorbed it. Once a year might be reasonable. Of course it is very convenient compared to the sponge systems.

Dear @Greg Voros,

I posted a topic on a cracked bridge yesterday. In the event that it requires replacing, do I need to take a night class in physics? Or should the new one pretty much line up? The patient is an electro-acousic. Does replacement bridges need extra attention like routing the slot, etc.

Due to my need for instant gratification, I've put CA in the cracks (by the slot ends). I'll know by tomorrow if that does the trick.
