@NeilES335 Do you remember this one?

I think I posted it on the old forum at some point. It’s currently one of Taylor’s legacy models, but Long & McQuade may have two in stock in Ontario. I wouldn’t mind having one myself. It’s right around your price point.

Thanks for the suggestion Gerard; I had not considered this one... It is one of a number of "newer' "crossover" guitars coming out these days with the narrower nut width of 1 7/8" vs the usual 2 " classical nut width.  I see this one has a spruce top, with the usual Taylor bright tone. Personally I prefer the cedar top with rosewood back/sides for a warmer fuller sound. I've never seen one in person but i would try it out if I did... Im sure the quality is good.

Neil, I had to do a double-take on the Multiac Nylon style. :o Sure looks more like an electric!

By the way, both of these links are displaying the same page. Can you edit the second link to show the one you are interested in? I'd like to see what it is. Thanks! :)

Hi Cindy; I corrected the link, and here it is as well; https://www.long-mcquade.com/16691/Guitars/Classical-Guitars/Godin-Guitars/Multiac-Nylon-Encore-SG-W-bag.htm

These are beautiful and very interesting instruments. You're right, they really are more of an nylon electric than acoustic. The higher end models come with a special connector cable to attach to a Boss synthesizer unit, so you can play virtual instruments like organ, flute, piano, horns etc. etc. There are loads of videos on YouTube about these.

Godin's website http://www.godinguitars.com/godinmultiac.html   A you can see there is a broad range of options from traditional neck/nut width, to crossover,  with synth or without etc. even uke's and steel string models. They are very popular performance instruments especially in a live setting.

My only hesitation is that i dont really use an amp that much, other than my Vox amPhones(guitar amp headphones which are great btw)

Hi Neil,

I know you like Bossa Nova, so I wanted to share this song with you. It makes me want to buy a nylon string as well.

On a sidenote: I am doing Ear Training at the moment and this is the song that I use to recognize a minor 6th interval, as this is the dinstance between the 2 first notes.

Wim.

Thanks very much Wim. I enjoyed that rendition of Black Orpheus... they did a great job.

Cindy, if you look carefully at the 2nd guitarist in the above video, I believe she is playing Godin Mulitac Nylon .

The plain cedar top complements the radical contemporary style of the design which is terrific! :)

But have you played one? Looking at the specs, a cedar top (which is warmer than a sitka spruce top and softer than spruce) paired with maple (which is very bright). I'm kind of puzzled with how it would sound. Usually cedar is paired with either mahogany or rosewood. If you've heard one, can you please describe its overall tone?

No Cindy; I have not played one... yet.  I'm thinking of asking my local music store to bring one in for me to try...(or I can drive about a 1/2 hour to another one of their stores)

They have undersaddle transducer pickups and an acoustic pickup under the chambered top. You can shape the sound with the EQ on board, or with an amp to almost any tone you want. Which is why so many pros use them...

It will be interesting to hear your impressions of it, Neil! Please be sure to tag me when you write a response. I don't want to miss it. The combination is so unusual; however, they wouldn't make this combo if people didn't buy them. :)

While not exactly entry level, I would love to have a Cervantes Crossover.

Robert -

Cervantes' Crossovers used to be priced in the low to mid $2,000 range (depending on the type of wood used and whether a pick-up was installed). However, their prices increased last year, so they are now anywhere from $2,500 to $3,000 (again, depending on the type of wood and whether a pick-up is installed). I would like to find a cheap lightly used one. :)

There was one listed on eBay last month for around $1,200, but it had issues.

I stopped by the local Taylor dealer yesterday during my lunch break and played an Academy 12e-N. It is part of Taylor's entry or 'budget' line of guitars that are made in Mexico. It has a laminated back and sides (although I couldn't tell) and a solid spruce top. Other features include Taylor's ES-N pickup and preamp and a built-in armrest that was very comfortable.

If you are looking for a crossover type of nylon string guitar, this one might be worth checking out. Note: You can see short demos of the guitar at the link above.

Dave those look like really nice guitars.  How did you like it?  Thank you for posting.

The build quality was excellent and the sound is what I would be looking for in a crossover nylon string guitar. For me, the nut width was a bit more comfortable than a traditional classical guitar and I liked the brightness of the spruce top. I did compare it a cedar-topped Alvarez (the only other nylon string guitar in the store) and the Alvarez sounded quite a bid 'darker'.

The Yamaha CGX122MCC looks like a nice guitar - I like the cutaway - and you can't go wrong ordering from Sweetwater.

Best wishes for your search!

Thanks Dave.  Do you feel these older guitars are of higher quality?  I guess my concern would be condition of th neck when I can't have anyone check it out.

hold the string at first fret and last fret and see if there is a gap . gap is not good if more than a mm

look down the fretboard from the body and see if it is straight

at the 12 fret there ought to be no more than the thickness of a dime ( 5p if english)

between the fret and the string tiny bit more if you hit the strings hard

I have a very nice Taylor NC24ce. The guitar thrives on fingerstyle. You can play most styles short of full on metal mode.

Yamaha makes excellent entry level nylon string guitars.

I just talked to the Yamaha dealer here today and he is getting some of the Yamaha CGX122's in stock soon.  I'm so glad I talked to him because i was about to pull the trigger on Sweetwater.com without playing.  He is getting both the cedar and spruce tops which is good because I wasn't sure which way to go.  Now I can see for myself what I prefer.
