This topic has probably been addressed numerous times in the past. To avoid searching back through all the posts, I will ask the question once again. My goal here is to merely record my practice to hear and analyze my playing. At this point I only have acoustic guitars without electronics. Hoping to make it simple and keep it inexpensive. I have recorded with my phone on video but it is too distorted to be of much help. Appreciate your ideas.

I use my voice recorder app on my phone, not video.

I put it on my music stand.

Does your app (better the audio app than the video app, as Eracer says) have a recording volume control so that you can increase the gain on a weak sound and turn down a loud signal?

Is the distorted sound just on certain accented places or on the whole recording?

If you are struggling, send me a sample recording. Ask for my email address by PM.

The deuce

I use a mic from best buy works great plugs into UBS port . does not have to be close to you . just set it away  from you to the sound level is right . or go into the computer to set the record level of the mic . just use your computer or laptop . This is the one i use . but there are cheaper ones.  Good luck.

If you are an iPhone user, try the "Just Press Record" app.  It will most likely suffice for what you want.

If you want the capability to record at a higher quality but still a fairly simple setup/interface you can get a Zoom or Tascam portable recorder for around $100.

Appreciate the recording practice suggestions, great to hear what others are doing. Seems like the simplest way to record would be a phone app which at present I don't have but will get. Maybe with time a person would like a higher quality recording. Just all part of the guitar learning experience.

I use the iPhone app Voice Memos, works great and keeps it simple. The only problem that I have had is that the replay doesn't sound as good as my playing /singing.

What most here have found is that getting into digital recording using a DAW and mic's is a learning curve just as steep as learning to play an instrument and can become just as gear intensive.  Even doing a simple recording of acoustic and vocals through a DAW will require some learning, but if your goal is to eventually do high quality recordings of your playing, its the way to go.

That said, I still wish I had gone with a Zoom/Tascam as my first recording solution rather than a DAW.

I agree with this, if all you are looking to do is record yourself for now.

The Zoom Q2N is an excellent little device for the price. At $150, it sound amazing and records decent video as well.

If all you want to do is record audio though, Zoom also makes an attachment that plugs right into your iPhone. The iQ6 is $100 though.

If you don't want to bother with your phone, Zoom also makes a stand alone recording device, also for $100. The H1N.

It might be cool for you to look around the Zoom website and see if anything there excites you enough to invest in. They have great audio/video recording products.

And, no, I don't work for Zoom! 😀

Thanks Old Guy your insight about Zoom recording options. I will certainly take a look at their website. I did down load a recording app and though it was good I found it somewhat inadequate. One thing I have found thus far is my playing is choppy. Though I use a metronomes often, I believe I'm not playing in the grove. In other words I'm not feeling the music. Hope to overcome this eventually.

Hi @The deuce

I couldn't see in the thread what phone you're using. If you have an iPhone or iPad, then just use the Voice Recorder app that should already be on the device. It is simple and the quality is great. I have posted a recording here which was recorded just on an iPhone with no further processing.

My 'next step up' recommendation would be a Zoom H1n handheld recorder (or one of the more expensive ones if you want more features). Very simple and great quality.

LAN I do have both both an iPhone and iPad. I have searched the apps on these devices but do not see a Voice Recorder app. I'm tech challenged and must be overlooking something. Both my devices are several years old, could this be the issue?

If I can offer another piece of advice, rather than record yourself with a device, get an inexpensive looper pedal and practice with it. That will really accelerate improving your timing significantly. Pair that with a metronome, and you'll be "grooving" in no time!

Have a look on your iPhone/iPad for what looks like an app called 'Extras'. This is actually a kinda folder with a few apps in it, one of them is 'Voice Memos'. Once you open it, it's just a case of pressing the big red button to start recording and pressing it again to stop recording.

Thanks lan got it. While searching the apps on my iPhone/iPad I did see this app. Should have tried it but dismissed it, thinking this can't be the one. Guess I was hung up on looking for the Voice Recorder app rather than the Voice Memos app.

Appreciate the looper pedal paired with metronome idea. At this point I don't have any guitar electronics, still somewhat intimidated by everything. Seems in the journey to become a better guitar player you find yourself involved with things totally foreign to you at one time. That is part of the fun in learning guitar. Who knows what's down the road.

@The Deuce, keep in mind, "Who knows what's down the road", is usually accompanied with a price tag.
