  1. This is meant as a gift for everyone in this community. At least I’m hopeful it is perceived as such. I’ve been thinking about doing this shortly after the site was taken down and I’ve finally been working on it for the last few weeks. As of this moment, it’s still incomplete and it is, quite obviously, a far cry from the original. Many files were not “captured” and are missing, unfortunately. I tried to do my best with what I found. And this is the result. I deeply appreciate everything that @Steve Krenz has given us all, over the years. From the first Learn and Master course to the renewed Gibson version, the Song Hits, the Fingerstyle course, the Spotlight Series Blues course, that first very shy stream he did on Ustream from his house that grew over time to become the Youtube Live Lesson series from Gruhn Guitars (and lately from his living room) that we all love and praise, all the interviews he shared with us, the amazing content produced for Gibson’s Skills House, and most of all the perseverance and resilience he taught and inspired through all of this. Like I mentioned before, this is still unfinished. I'm still working on it. The “Interviews” section will be up and running in a few days time, hopefully. On the “Guitar Apprentice” section, only one song is available, but I’ll try to have the other two finished not too long from now. And I’ll try to update the “Song Lessons” right after that, but it will probably take a little more time to finish. But the best parts are done. Namely the "Foundation Lessons", the "Style Lessons" and the "Power Workouts". A lot of files are missing and I try to mention that every time it occurs. Some lessons have no video. Others have no TAB. Full screen view is not an available option. I tried to make the layout as close to the original as possible and practical. Google Sites is a great resource, although quite limited, and my programing and design skills are close to none. It has a lot of limitations and it’s not as fluid as the original site was, but then again this is a remake, a “cover version” if you will. A simple indexing site for scattered data. It’s an attempt to recall and revive something I loved and followed faithfully back when it was operational. It was quite a shock for me when I tried to access the Skills House site and found it to be down. Gone. Everything. For good! I was sad. And, quite honestly, a bit hangry. I felt “robbed”. Fortunately, for all of us fans and followers of Steve’s work, there is this “thing” called “Internet Archive” with its “Wayback Machine”. And with a bit of time, luck and devotion, this is now up and running. I really hope you enjoy it. I hope it helps you in any way. Big or small. I hope you can find value in it. I hope it makes your guitar journey easier, more pleasant and fulfilling. Steve has been sharing outstanding content through many platforms, namely this forum and his Youtube channel. And I look forward to future content he has to share. This is just a humble way of remembering some of his past online lessons in a navigation friendlier format. So, without further ado, here is the Good Ol’ Skills House -> bit.ly/skillshouse Enjoy!
  2. So Gibson moved their ES line from Memphis back to Nashville in order to streamline production and focus on quality. Well, I thought I would never get one until now. The new generation ES line seems promising. I mean it has to be since there are so many great alternatives, and I own a couple. But I thought I couldn’t go wrong with the real ES-335 this time. The amount of precision that goes into making the guitar these days, thanks to modern technology and machinery, should make the instrument as good as it can be. Right? I took a chance and got one. Nothing fancy, satin finish which makes the guitar less expensive. I got an extra deal on it, too. It’s equipped the same as the higher models with more frills. The new T-Type pickups are really a modern version of T-Tops from the mid 60s and 70s. They really fit the vibe of this semi-hollow guitar and give it a warn, creamy sound. I love that. I was a little worried about the neck profile and how chunky it may feel. However, even though it has a little more meat to it than my usually preferred slim taper neck, it actually feels great. The rounded C neck makes it a joy to play. I realize the satin finish will develop shiny patches in high touch areas over time, but I’m OK with that. Now, is it better than my less expensive alternatives (D’Angelico EX-DC and Sheraton II Pro)? I have to say YES. The Gibson ES-335 is better, but the alternatives are pretty close. Each guitar has its own character, but put the same electronics in say the Epiphone and chances are you won’t hear the difference. And yet there’s nothing like the real deal, is there?
  3. I recently saw that the Gibson site is posting more lessons by Arlen Roth. These are similiar to the lessons Steve used to do for Gibson. Nice short videos on one subject including tabs and MP4 videos. So far there are 23 pages with about 5 free lessons per page. I have been working on these for the past 3 weeks and have been through over 30 of the lessons so far. I have found several that I really like and of course the price is right. Wish Steve was still doing these. (Glad I printed most of his lessons before they took them down.) Here is the link: http://www.gibson.com/Lessons/Arlen-Roth-Lessons/Search.aspx?type=lessons&page=1
  4. "NEW" guitar day! Very chuffed to show my "new" Gibson Memphis ES-137 Classic Heritage Cherry Sunburst! Hand carved Flame Maple top, back and sides, (even the neck) Trapezoid Mother of Pearl in lays with special "C" market at the 12th fret. Gibson 490 R and 498 T pickups..This guitar, a 2004 model is in amazing 9.5/10 condition, and plays superbly! Warm creamy jazz tones all the way to snarly singing blues... and everything in between. It is described by some as being the perfect blend of a Les Paul and and ES -335 ... It is a semi - hollow, BUT, the centre block is mahogany, (not maple) ,to increase sustain and reduce feedback. The centre block does not touch the solid top, which gives this guitar extreme resonance and sustains like crazy! There's a full description; https://goo.gl/fQ3XAo I bought it mostly for the "jazz tones"(ala ES175, CES-4, L-5 etc.) but it's so versatile, any serious player would love it for any style! Will this take #1 spot over my beloved ES-335? We'll see... I spotted this on a 'Blow Out Inventory Sale" at our largest music retailer, Long and McQuade. I lined up at 8:30am on the first day of the sale, to get a number, to get a chance to buy it... I was 14th.. Fortunately, I was the 1st to speak for this guitar and they kindly put it aside for me. When I was "demo'ing" it, a couple of other guys wanted it too and hung around to see it I took it... NO way guys... this ones mine! And the price... well, you wouldn't believe it if I told you! What a gem. Special thanks to Greg Voros and BWillard (our resident Gibson expert and passionate collector) for their valued opinions on this. I was also pleased to pick up a superb deal for my friend EracerTeam_DougH, a beautiful Epiphone Sheraton Natural, with gold hardware, also at a superb price. I 'll let him tell you about that...
