"Sunny" is a soul jazz song written by Bobby Hebb in 1963. It is one of the most performed and recorded popular songs, with hundreds of versions released. BMI rates "Sunny" #25 in its "Top 100 songs of the century".[1] It is also known by its first line: "Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain".[2]

Tip on playing this song; It's all about the rhythm! Listen to the original version on YouTube and the many other recordings by various artists. The melody is actually quite simple, based on the Am Pentatonic Scale, played in the 5th position. Have fun with it!  Neil

  4. A Great Jazz Guitar Trick: Patterns and the Power of Three

Topic: A Great Jazz Guitar Trick: Patterns and the Power of 3!
Ready to learn a great jazz guitar trick?
The ear recognizes patterns - patterns in chords, patterns in notes.  You can use patterns to create incredible sounding progressions just by moving identical chord shapes to different parts of the neck - particularly three frets apart.
Here's a great lesson on a wonderful concept of patterns and their use in threes.  I know it sounds odd but, trust me, it's a handy tool to use.  With some incredible musical results from just a bit of guitar sleight of hand.
Here's a simple PDF of some of the concepts we'll be covering...

  9. Jazz "Comping" Chords

If you'd like to try some of the jazz tunes I've uploaded here, you'll need to know a few more basic chord shapes! It's only 8 chords to memorize.
If you haven't gone through Steve K's Fretboard Workout Jazz Chords, then here's a few to get you started. You'll be surprised what you can play with these beautiful sounding chords. They can be used in other applications too of course.
Note that in these chord charts, the view is from the 6th string on the bottom, and the red dot indicates the root note! (this could be backward to what you're used to seeing)
    Enjoy!

  11. My Cherie Amour

https://soundcloud.com/neiles335/my-cherie-amour  My version of the song.
A very popular hit by the great Stevie Wonder from his album of the same name in 1969. Not a really difficult song... most late intermediate and advanced students should be able to handle this one!
    Enjoy!  Neil
ps The recorded version has an intro, and a 3rd verse where the key goes up a half step to Ab from Gmaj. This is not noted on the Lead Sheet.

  18. Using Chord Tones as Seeds for Soloing

This is the PDF for the Live Lesson by Steve Krenz on August 6th 2019.   Description: Some may think that improvising is pure creativity - a person creating on a blank canvas - which can be quite intimidating. But, often, it's more like combining creative links to make a chain of ideas. These links or idea "seeds" can be built from the chord tones using some simple techniques that we'll be showing tonight. You can start off by using simple tricks around the chord tones to jump start the creativity. It's a great technique.
